I am re-assessing my usage of social media. Blooski’s likely to be my home base going forward. However, for a while my posting will be sparse and mostly composed of re-sharing other content. Slide into my DMs if you’d like to get in touch offline. 😅
Fuck this war.

The big man is giving a lot of reasons to many people to just do it.

Welp. My partner who works in manufacturing just got notice of a week-long layoff. Fucking fantastic trade policy.

X is not worth 33 billion. He basically just paid himself $33B from another company, presumably to pay off his debts from the initial buy because he knows he'll never be able to raise the capital from X itself.

He is his own ponzi scheme.

"Architects of fear have converted a wholesome law against conspiracy into an instrument for making association a crime. Pretending to fear government they ask government to outlaw protest. They glorify togetherness when it is theirs & call it conspiracy when it is that of others." - John F. Kennedy

Colleagues are cancelling their US work trips. I worry that international colleagues in the US are at risk if they collaborate with us on certain topics.

I've written a new post about the increasing danger of being a foreign scientist in the US.

Trump's attacks on universities get ever darker, with the shadows reaching our shores
The US has become a hostile and authoritarian state to foreign scientists and is choosing ideology over science.

New Rubio order (leaked to me) directs the State Department to spy on student visa holders and applicants social media for "a hostile attitude toward U.S. citizens or U.S. culture (including government, institutions, or founding principles).”

I’m sounding like a broken record, but people need to make contingency plans, and decide what risks they can tolerate for themselves and their loved ones and people they don’t know, for a full-fledged authoritarian dictatorship of the oligarchy, a fascist one even.

the SAMHSA death knell of course wouldn’t be complete without a rug pull of already awarded funding, firing 10k+ workers & a “restructuring”

Being snatched off the street for your opinions. I'll say it again. We are deciding, right now, whether the aspirations we hold for this country are finished. Whether we're going to let these hoodlums and grifters throw what's left of the American idea into the garbage for their own profit and gain.
RUMEYSA OZTURK KIDNAPPING VIDEO

Here is a video of federal agents detaining Tufts University PhD student Rumeysa Ozturk Tuesday night.

Rumeysa was abducted as she was heading to meet with friends to break her Ramadan fast.

It’s worth pointing out that all summer child care sign up dates are long past. It’s really easy to take a lunch break, grab the kids at 3 pm (which is when a lot of camps end the day) and finish work.

Extended care isn’t always available and adds expense if it does.

I think an underrated aspect of the current state telework policy is that it allowed talented people with disabilities to join the civil service without having to do the added labor demanded of us by the ADA — disclosure, reasonable accommodations, appeals, etc. — to enjoy an equitable workplace.

Going into the next fiscal biennium with a projected budget deficit and possible recession, your solution is to hail mary subsidize commercial real estate, cut special education transportation, discipline labor, and increase risk-adverse economic behavior.

Text from a fed employee:

“We are truly alone.”
"I don’t get paid if there’s a shutdown but shutting the government down and putting up a fight is preferable to giving in."

"Every single one of my colleagues supports a shutdow."

"Everyone I know in my office was hoping the Dems would grow a spine and shut the government down."

this guy’s distinguishing quality is his boundless contempt for anyone who voices the slightest disagreement with him. you can see in his voice and mannerisms that he thinks he’s better than everyone around him. (which to my mind is just compensation for his palpable self-loathing)
