Rather than focusing our upcoming special legislative session on actual problems like flood mitigation and keeping Texans safe, Gov. Abbott also wants new congressional districts

We shared some thoughts on the topic with @theguardian.com

A risky bet? Texas Republicans poised to redraw state congressional map on Trump’s orders
The move would likely weaken influence of the state’s fast-growing non-white population and backfire on the GOP

📰 With protests making headlines across the globe, it’s important for journalists to think about the way they frame their coverage and the impact it can have.

Our study shows that humanizing the person at the center of a protest and legitimizing the purpose can shift public perception powerfully.

I will be damned if I allow a bunch of Confederate-waving January 6th apologists give the American people a lecture on flag waving.

There is ZERO reason to enter an argument about patriotism with people who still worship traitors to America 150+ years later.

They. Are. Breaking. The. Law.

SB 16 would have required Texans to provide proof of citizenship in order to register to vote. ❌ This bill would have impacted over 12 MILLION Texans!❗Here's what our Executive Director, @antgutierrez.bsky.social had to say.

Got to share some thoughts w/@sacurrent.bsky.social on absurdity of Texas refusing to let Texans register to vote online:

"It's incredibly disappointing, because online voter registration is such a common sense policy that would vastly improve our incredibly antiquated voter registration system"
May 16, 2025 at 8:23 PM
You may have heard of the federal SAVE Act that would make registering to vote a whole lot harder

But did you know SB 16 - the TX version of the SAVE Act - is dangerously close to becoming law in Texas

👉 Wrote a piece on it for @elpasomatters.bsky.social

Opinion: Texas lawmakers should reject plan to make voting even harder
Texas Senate Bill 16 is a clone of bad legislation in Congress and other states.

Last night was the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere's midnight ride to warn the Minutemen of approaching British troops.

I want to take a moment to share an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence's grievances against King George III.

Remind you of anyone?

I’ve been inundated w/ Q’s about the boundaries of our constitutional rights. Q’s about whether & how people can protest, considerations & calculus for whether they should exercise their speech rights. Freedom in the age of revenge is a fragile premise. We are all feeling the fear. That’s the point.

"We must shield our elections from AI-generated disinformation.

Texans deserve to make their electoral decisions based on truth, and this bill will go a long way toward realizing that goal."

Ignore the media headlines reporting that freezing federal spending or shuttering federal agencies “raise questions” or “push boundaries.” It’s an anticonstitutional lawbreaking spree.

This NYT sleight-of-hand is part of why Trump’s insane racism flourishes. The implication is that it’s possible to “attack diversity” WITHOUT a “racist undercurrent.”

And it “surfaces” - as though Trump hasn’t been a rabid and explicit racist for years, and this is some new tone.

Perfectly articulated

Grind everything to a halt. Ring all the alarms

And ffs - maybe think about pointing out how insanely crazy it is for our legislative and judicial branches to have basically just opted out of their responsibility to check the executive
A constitutional crisis requires friction to make it legible. That often comes from conflict between the branches of government, but a Republican-controlled Congress and SCOTUS are not interested in challenging Trump’s lawlessness. That why it’s *especially* important for Democrats to act.
