Here is just one scene. It’s repeated block after block for miles.

The tornado was at least a mile wide where I am working.

Yesterday my hometown was hit with massive tornadoes. We weren't expecting them in places that have never been hit before and have no idea who will help us. FEMA is all but dead and our state is run by Republicans that hate the city. This is the canary in the coal mine. My latest.

A New Hampshire man with a green card was detained by immigration officers at Logan Airport and is being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the Donald W. Wyatt detention facility in Central Falls, Rhode Island. Fabian Schmidt’s family said they are unsure of why he is being held. They said he has a recently renewed green card, and no active issues in court. Schmidt had been visiting Luxembourg and flew back to the U.S. on Friday. His partner had gone to pick him up at Logan Airport, and waited four hours before calling authorities. “It was just said that his green card was flagged,” said Astrid Senior, his mother. She said she didn’t hear from her son directly until Tuesday, when she learned he’d been hospitalized. Senior described Schmidt being “violently interrogated” at Logan Airport for hours, and being stripped naked, put in a cold shower by two officials, and being put back onto a chair. She said Schmidt told her immigration agents pressured him to give up his green card. She said he was placed on a mat in a bright room with other people at the airport, with little food or water, suffered sleep deprivation, and was denied access to his medication for anxiety and depression.

This reminds me of John Doar's meeting with Freedom Summer volunteers before they went down to Mississippi.

He sympathized with the work but told them, accurately, that the federal government couldn't protect them and they were on their own. Some were furious; others appreciated the straight talk.
Paragraph from my draft manuscript on Doar and the Civil Rights Division: It was John Doar’s duty to deliver this unwelcome message to the students in Oxford. The Civil Rights Division leader had long expressed his admiration for the “heroes” in SNCC who were fighting to bring democracy to Mississippi. Privately, he was a bit thrown by their determination to confront white supremacy in the darkest corners of the Deep South. SNCC’s fiery field secretaries reminded him of “young people who, when asked to go out and get some firewood, immediately sink their ax into the biggest tree in the forest.” Still, he was impressed. “I hope they don’t get discouraged,” he noted in a 1963 interview. “I hope they stick it out and keep working. After all, they’re only trying to urge people to register.” Nevertheless, he cautioned, it was “very difficult” for federal officials like him to protect them during that work. “I can’t keep a crime from being committed,” he shrugged apologetically. Speaking at the Freedom Summer orientation, he repeated this stance. The student volunteers were “real heroes,” he stressed again, praising their courage and their convictions. But when he noted that the federal government lacked any power to protect them, the room grew restless. A black activist in overalls challenged him point blank: “What are you going to do to enable us to see the fall?” Doar could only answer, “Nothing. There is no federal police force. The responsibility for protection is that of the local police. We can only investigate.” “You could feel a sudden, palpable deflation in the room,” remembered SNCC leader Stokely Carmichael. “Then anger and disappointment.” As boos and shouts filled the hall, Bob Moses rose to defend his friend Doar and chided the students for the outburst: “We don’t do that.” Doar wasn’t responsible for the federal policy, Moses noted, and he deserved thanks for traveling there and telling it to them straight.
