A nice review of our latest book 'Mismanaged Decline' in the FT today. I particularly enjoyed the 'esteemed economists' bit, though in my case it is probably just a euphemism for 'old'!

I see references to the 'cost' of nationalising things again, now Burnham has started talking about it. Need to bear in mind that this is the price of an asset that might have a yield. The 'cost' is the difference between the interest rate on the loan and that yield. Which could be +ive or -ive.

"The political logic of treating migrants as permanent second-class citizens is not clear."

@robfordmancs.bsky.social shows making it harder for migrants working and paying taxes to settle here is *incredibly* unpopular.

Also applies to Labour/Tory proposals! (1/2)

Introducing slightly less cruel/damaging version of Farage's plans would not "outmanoeuvre Reform";would be an economic/ political own goal

Far better to attack Reform/Tories for Powellite ethnonationalism & say migrants who come here, contribute & *choose* to stay are welcome -and become British.
The current Home Secretary who identifies as 'Blue Labour' was put in place precisely to outmanoeuvre Reform to the right on immigration so we can be fairly certain more costly and lengthy/conditional routes to citizenship will be announced in due course.
This excellent piece by @liamthorp.bsky.social focuses on Farage.

But as it correctly says, the much more immediate threat is that *Labour* will move the goalposts.

Why trying to out-Farage Farage is just never going to work for Labour.

I can stand a lot but this is a very difficult read. It's not just that the video evidence directly contradicts Israel's previous paper-thin account of events; it's the sum of damning evidence of the systematic, knowing perpetration of the most serious war crimes by the army and the state.

The government has been criticised for setting up a large number of reviews.

But @drbenpaxton.bsky.social says this criticism is misplaced – reviews have an important role to play in good policy making www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/gove...

"If the argument is that ideology is bound to influence the priors that evidence confronts, then of course, but if the argument is that it’s OK to continue to always deny evidence because of these priors then I would strongly disagree."
As Christina says, Sunak's actions over this period are symptoms of an attitude to science which should concern everyone, as my post today discusses mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2023/11/why-... That includes economics, because what he certainly didn't do is help the economy.
My thoughts on @BBCRadio4 Today programme this morning about the evidence on Eat Out To Help Out scheme from Vallance's testimony yesterday and how it was emblematic of Sunak's disinclination to list to advice from SAGE scientists.
