On Monday, I suddenly recognized the subject of a photo in a 1967 newspaper. A huge metal sign, promising that “the world’s largest food center” would open the following year, was familiar to me. Now decrepit, it sits among trees and marshy plants next a freeway access road near my home. Thread:
I was looking through some old scanned newspapers and had a sudden, intense flash of recognition. More on this tomorrow - the rabbit hole it sent me down has now explained a bunch of seemingly disconnected, anomalous things about my neighborhood. Turns out it's all because of a failed megaproject.
