PSA - you do not “owe” anyone an immediate reply. It’s okay to take pauses in conversation. Especially if they’re not face to face. It’s normal as we juggle multiple things at once in our busy lives. The technology that connects us is a tool, not an obligation.
Okay I love you bye bye

Reading more poetry is helping my heart right now. Most recently, “Hurricane” by Mary Oliver.
What’s helping your heart?

Under the GOP's SAVE Act, Tribal IDs would NO LONGER be accepted as valid identification to register to vote.

This is a direct attack on the voting rights of Native American communities.

There is nothing quite as devastating as having to admit to a crowd of single lesbians that I am, honestly, allergic to cats.

Today I’ll be gathering with loved ones for festivities.
I’m also sending big love to all the other coparents who aren’t with their kids today. 🥰
As someone wise told me, let the kids see you live fully, enjoy life, be something strong they can trust.
And be gentle with your own heart today. 💕✨

PSA. The abuse doesn’t just stop when you leave a narcissist. It sometimes gets worse. Have a good support system in place. Get a good therapist. You can do it.

I say screw comfort zones. I spent my whole life trying on a deep level to preserve a type of comfort zone. Guess what? I finally blew everything up and I found that on the other side of that so called comfort zone was where the real magic was happening.

Earnest post, but: a thing I like here is it’s okay to have moments of happiness in public without being broadly scolded, and I believe that sustaining this kind of humanity will be very important as we resist fascism.

We have to sustain each other. Making joy isn’t denial, it’s how we will survive

Adding names and numbers to my contacts list…
All of us Xennial and Millennial types who don't like talking on the phone are going to have to get over that. Channel our inner teens. Endless phone calls to Congress. I just wish I still had the beige kitchen phone with the cord that could stretch to the sun to play with while I called...
Lemme tell you - sometimes I talk with staffers who seem VERY happy to have progressive constituents making noise. Staffers sometimes really AGREE with us and our calls give them something to take back to their bosses. Call your reps, y'all. It matters.

A very good thread. 💓
A thread about feelings stuff around Our New Political Reality™.

First of all, as always:

eat
take your meds
hydrate
tell your people you love them
let them love you back

The first three make an ENORMOUS difference in our capacity to grapple w/ All The Things; the last two are kind of The Point.

I highly encourage everyone who cares about preserving liberal democracy to listen to this podcast series.

And of you aren’t reading @anneapplebaum.bsky.social please do. She will go down as perhaps the greatest writer defending democracy in this age.
Last summer I put together a five-part podcast, with Peter Pomerantsev, exploring some of the ways in which democracy is already declining in the US, and how to think about it. Available on Spotify, Apple, YouTube and the Atlantic website
