We are so humiliatingly deep into tinpot dictatorship territory. The government has just brokered the coerced sale of a major media platform to an ally of the president, who is openly boasting about converting it into (even more of) a partisan propaganda outlet.

The Biden-Harris admin deciding that shutting down anti-genocide speech was more worthwhile than shutting down the genocide itself helped lead us to Trump-Vance, which is shredding whatever was left of the “First Amendment” & mockingly revealing how hollow their allies’ commitments to it were

If you ever wondered how people could condone or ignore the systematic dehumanization & cold calculated atrocities carried out by the Nazis, you’re currently seeing that happen with the vast majority of elected reps, cultural institutions, religious orgs, and regular folks in both Israel and the US.

All famines are man-made, all famines are political. Historians of empire and humanitarianism have known this forever. Gaza is not starving, Gaza is being starved, by Israel, and this starvation is enabled by our government and by every other government that does not step in to force food and aid.

the reporting process was: “we talked to an amateur nazi race science guy who talked to known bad actor bigot chris rufo & then printed their thoughts about an unsuccessful 2009 college application by a ugandan indian who applied as a ugandan indian”

if you’re still fucking with NYT, you fund this.
NEW: NYT Executive Editor Joe Kahn spoke about the Mamdani article at his daily meeting with top editors this morning, praising both the story and the reporting process, a Times source tells me. He also praised Assistant Managing Editor Pat Healy’s explanation of the situation that he posted on X.

This whole thread is hugely important— it chronicles the on-going disappearance of a broad swath of critical publicly-funded data across US department and agency websites.
A new era of government censorship has begun.
It started with the silencing of scientific speech, when the admin blocked release of research on bird flu. But MAGA has also cracked down on other wrongthink—on race, geography (!), and of course Trump himself

People my age and younger don’t even know what pensions ARE. Gen Z hasn’t even been told what was taken away from us!! When you don’t know what has gotten worse or why it’s much easier to be sold a lie by the people taking it away from you!!
Nostalgia in politics can work for more than one thing, it doesn't only have to be a guy saying "Don't you miss being racist" it could be a different guy saying "Remember when people had pensions"

one of the most insane normalized aspects of our political climate is politicians going after their own constituents in the name of anti-wokeness. what are we doing here
