Want to diversify your reading list, think Black History Month is the perfect time to do it, but don’t know where to start? Over the next 28 days I will share one Black author a day that I’ve read & enjoyed. For the most part these are not the most famous, award-winning authors.

2/28 I saved my favorite for last - Phoebe Robinson.

She didn’t write the most important book on this list (That’s Caste. Read it.) or most awarded or... but she is on my auto-buy list. I’ve read, and listened to, all her books because 1) they are FUNNY and 2)

2/27 Tee Franklin has written several “Harley Quinn: The Animated Series” comic books, but my favorite graphic novel of hers is “Bingo Love,” the sweet story of Hazel and Mari’s romance that spans over 60 years.

2/26 Shonda Rhimes is another author much more famous for her other job – in this case, creating & producing too many hit tv shows to list – but her book, “Year of Yes,” is a favorite. Another where I recommend the audiobook as it includes recordings of some of her speeches.

2/25 For anyone who didn’t want to read Black authors in February because the month is already depressing, I give you Samantha Irby. She makes me LOL.

2/24 Renée Watson is the author of picture, middle grade, and YA books. I loved her Newberry Honor book, “Piecing Me Together,” about Jade, a high school collage artist. Jade has a powerful and thought-provoking voice.

2/22 Today’s author, Mikki Kendall does a lot of things well. She is a non-fiction, graphic novel, and sci-fi author, activist, and cultural critic. She is probably best known for her book “Hood Feminism,” or her activity on Twitter... 1/2

Send Dems into rural America to talk about what Trump is doing. The Republicans are too scared and won’t show their faces…in the vacuum of messaging, there is power.

Tell the folks who is hurting them. Point to the GOP. Be the foil to the shit that’s happening. Be the party of the people.

Want to tell the public what US government workers actually do, vs. the propaganda spewed by DOGE? This incredible website, "We the Builders," is asking for first-person testimonials from government workers about their actual jobs, and how they make the government work. www.wethebuilders.org

2/21 Today’s author is easily the most well-known person on the list, while obviously famous for other things. But I loved Michelle Obama’s “Becoming,” & would highly recommend the audiobook. 1/2

Interesting thread. Scroll to the top to read it all.
I never expected my teenage fascination with Heraldry to be relevant to modern politics. Never expected it to be useful to know when I learned it circa 2006, except as trivia, that only two people actively declared themselves above any laws of man: The Pope, and Donald Trump.

But here we are.
Publicly abandoning American and Ukranian democracy on the same day.

There are, to my knowledge, only two significant individuals or institutions who break this rule, and use metals on metals. They signify by doing so that the normal rules don't apply to them - they claim a higher authority.

One is the Vatican.

The other is Donald Trump.

Minnesota’s deputy director for the Small Business Administration was fired Feb. 7, rehired days later when the government said it made a mistake, and then fired again last week.

Another federal employee who was abruptly fired has newborn twins in the NICU.

More stories of chaos + cruelty:
Dozens of Minnesota federal workers fired in latest cuts, with no severance
The Minnesota Star Tribune talked to roughly two dozen workers who all said they were not the only ones in their departments to be cut.

2/18 Today’s author, Kacen Callender, writes middle grade & YA fiction & fantasy. Anyone who says, “you can’t judge a book by its cover,” never saw the gorgeousness that is the cover & story of my favorite, “Felix Ever After,” a beautiful story of identity & art & love.
