Wishing that the immediate experience of a heat wave would help folks connect the dots, but I know the AI hype is too distracting for many people.
What is the argument that this isn’t driving up energy use again? Enough to power a million homes. Millions of gallons of water used per year. All for one company, Anthropic. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/24/t...

The inability to connect dots will be our undoing.
But sure, ask ChatGPT to summarize that 2-sentence email into 1 sentence for you.
The largest U.S. grid covering providing nearly 70 million Americans electricity just issued an emergency warning about blackouts ahead of tomorrow's heat.

This framing is beneath contempt. The Christian right and MAGA launched an unprecedented assault on the civil rights of a tiny minority and successfully weaponized the pseudoliberal establishment - led by the NYT - to provide it with a medical controversy pretext that doesn’t actually exist.

The pain and suffering that will result from this ruling is hard to imagine. Wondering when we'll hit bottom.
Today's Supreme Court ruling comes as anti-trans hatred has become inescapable for many families, even in liberal states.

These families say they are in survival mode, trying to find ways to protect their children from attacks on all sides.

Watching higher ed willingly contribute to the death of expertise is sad and infuriating. Imagine spending two decades requiring assessment of every program and office only to embrace new AI toys that are only supported by hype--where's the data about achieving learning outcomes with these products?

I mean, the threats of missing out. It's the panic about MOOCs all over again.
The hysteria when you say, “nah I’m good” on all the chat bots is how you know they’re in the grips of roulette fever. You know the guy at a casino, shaking at 2 am, telling you how dumb you are not to get in on this?
The chatbot people are so upset. What are you going to do? Come to my home and force me to use ChatGPT?

I received 73 emails (so far) today on my work account. Some were easy deletes, many were not. I haven't dealt with all of them, but I also taught 2 classes, had meetings with 7 students, graded 29 quizzes and read 2 rough drafts. No wonder when I tried to write, I struggled.

Unsustainable.

Collectivity will be part of our survival, if we can envision it.
I hope other university alliances start pooling resources and engaging in the kinds of collective action Rutgers is proposing here for the Big Ten.

When you look at the list of institutions they want to defund: libraries, museums, the Smithsonian, public schools, PBS, NPR, archives, you can clearly see that the real threat to an authoritarian regime is an informed and educated public

Boss move. Put it on the record. And yes, absurd that this still happens.
A friend included this anti-acknowledgement section on her PhD thesis. She also added the proposition: “Systematic bullying and undermining of girls and women in STEM starts early on and is the reason why they do not stay in science and related fields.”
Absurd we still need to go through this

What is wrong with Senate Democrats? There is a five-alarm Article I constitutional crisis. No votes. No attending joint session Trump speeches. No normal operations at all until all the illegal stealing of Congress’ authority stops. Why is this so hard?
The Senate HELP cmte just voted 13-9 to advance Trump's labor sec. nominee, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, w/help from Dems (Hickenlooper, Hassan, Kaine)

This work starts now.
Midterms are up next. Local judges are often elected. Push back at them, congressional reps at the state and federal level. Your Governor, your mayor, literally every layer of government should be reminded that state's rights include the right to reject bigotry. Don't despair quietly. Push back

Truly, primary every single Democrat who supports the MAGA agenda. Incomprehensible. Also ask them why they hate dogs.
I want statements from all of them.

Democratic Senators who backed Noem:

Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania
Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia
Senator Andy Kim of New Jersey
Senator Gary Peters of Michigan
Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire
Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan
