Every frigid day like this, I think about this 2022 piece by @katieprout.bsky.social. No one should have to be outside today in Chicago, much less staying outside unsheltered overnight. That that might be preferable to the available shelter is incredibly damning.

Mothers Activating Movements for Abolition and Solidarity argue that the policy replacing physical mail with digital scans strips incarcerated people of dignity and creates new questions around privacy.
Illinois prisons don’t allow physical mail. Mothers are pushing to restore access.
Members of the advocacy group MAMAS argue that handwritten letters matter, especially to people who have been incarcerated for years.

Malicious failure to provide livable conditions is often an attempt to get rid of tenants so the building/land can be sold to developers. This makes me think even more that the owner called ICE on the tenants.
NEW — South Shore residents who still live in the apartment building that was raided by ICE nearly two months ago in Chicago spoke out about the unlivable conditions there.

“No one paid attention to the fact that people were living here without heat before ICE came.”

They're demanding, among other things, sewage removal and heat and electricity restroration.

Federal govt keep denying bond hearings to immigrants even though the feds keep losing habeas petitions. Their goal is to make people desperate enough that they’ll sign up for voluntary deportation, inflict pain so people leave, even if they have deep ties and good records in USA
A federal judge ruled Wednesday that the U.S. government’s mandatory detention of Diana Patricia Santillana Galeano, the day care teacher arrested at a Chicago preschool, is illegal and she must be given a bond hearing.
Judge rules mandatory detention of Chicago day care teacher by ICE is illegal
According to the ruling, Diana Santillana will be given a bond hearing in front of an immigration judge, who could order her released while her civil deportation case proceeds.

A reminder that the CPD are not going to protect us. That goes against the nature of policing. Their job is to enforce state power—not protect the people.
La Villita Se Defiende just posted this statement on IG. They are calling for the release of 9 people, 6 taken by ICE and 3 by CPD.
