Tools programmer and game designer among other things.
Having to say goodbye to friends sucks. I can keep in touch online but it's not the same as working together every day.

Well. I'm being laid off. That is... less than ideal. I'm trying to focus on the positive side (more time for personal projects) but... it still really sucks. I'm going to miss this team I've been on because they are amazing people.

Last week was great. I had some time off from work and used it to make a tool for myself in Godot. I have a tendency to start things and not finish them but this one is done and it feels great. I finished v1.0 on Friday and couldn't help but add more polish to it Saturday.

I love music. The fact that vibrations in the air are translated by our brains into music is mind blowing. And the creativity, skill, and artistry that it takes to make a good song is impressive. There's a reason people still play/remix/remaster old music.

Good advice
Note to myself from my offline game dev journal:

"Just make it. It's good to think one or two steps ahead, but this is prototype. This is POC. You will rewrite it from scratch at least once. Just make it work. "

Thought I might share it.

Finally finished Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Excellent game. A ton of fun. Music is amazing. It's not perfect but it's pretty close. A 9 out of 10. If I can go into decimals I'd give it 9.6 out of 10.

It's time for a break. It's good to pay attention to what's going on in the world around you but for the sake of my mental health I need to take a break. I'm muting every political term I can think of for a week. Until then it's just art, animals, food and games. And a hint of silent movies.

Saving Private Ryan. It was the first R-rated movie I ever watched back when I was 14 or so. We watched it together and then we talked about it. It had a powerful impact on my views of war but also changed how I view all movies. I started thinking about what the movies are actually saying/meaning.
Okay you guys, what’s the best book, movie, or TV show your dad introduced you to

This is one of many reasons I'm not a fan of LLMs: arxiv.org/abs/2506.08872. It also, anecdotally, matches with my personal experience from my tests with it. My company has a copilot enabled so for a few weeks I used it but I felt it made me a worse programmer while not actually saving any time.
Your Brain on ChatGPT: Accumulation of Cognitive Debt when Using an AI Assistant for Essay Writing Task
This study explores the neural and behavioral consequences of LLM-assisted essay writing. Participants were divided into three groups: LLM, Search Engine, and Brain-only (no tools). Each completed thr...

There is a reason why, when I teach video game design classes, I always try to get students interested in architecture: we are building playgrounds. You want to put the player in places that are interesting to inhabit.

This is pretty cool.
It’s never been easier to make a TTRPG. There’s so many resources available, each giving a framework that you can adapt for your vision. I thought I’d give a little insight into my process for getting things going.

Because the hardest thing is to actually start.

Imagine. It’s easy if you try.

I was in an airport riding the subway thing between terminals and someone across from me looked really familiar. I looked her up later to see if I was right and yep, it was Zoe Saldana.
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

One of my greatest fears is that I'll accidentally hit a kid like this Tesla does. But not only did the Tesla hit the dummy, it then kept on driving...
Even if you're a careful human driver, kids running out from behind/between cars is one of the scariest things that can happen, and it requires a high level of situational awareness. I cannot imagine turning over the avoidance of it to a system like this.
“Tesla’s driverless ‘robotaxis’ could launch in Austin as soon as June 22. But a demo in Austin today showed a $TSLA, manually driven to test its Full Self-Driving system, failed to stop for a child-sized dummy at a school bus—and hit it.”

Am I the only programmer that would rather read an article about something than watch a video on it? I keep seeing video "tutorials" on YouTube but it takes me longer to watch the video than it would take to read the same material. And it's a pain to go back and forth if you missed something.

The speed of writing code has never, and will never be the bottleneck.

The bottleneck, the limiting factor, is always in the thinking about the code and how it works, understanding it.

People who use chatgpt to write code are literally removing the only part of programming that is actually useful.

A fantastic link to be shared with anyone who declares they think ChatGPT is great for research, editing, any number of support tools for writing.

It's telling them what they want to hear, even if it means lying.

We did the math on AI’s energy footprint. Here’s the story you haven’t heard.
The emissions from individual AI text, image, and video queries seem small—until you add up what the industry isn’t tracking and consider where it’s heading next.
