One of my old PIs told me how surreal it was to her that people saw Barres at a conference (after transition) and would say things like "He's such a better speaker than his sister" and just be completely oblivious.
We're disappointed to see Ben Barres's powerful book "The Autobiography of a Transgender Scientist" among the ~400 titles removed from the Naval Academy Library. Needless to say, we're proud to have published his book and will keep it — and his memory — alive.

The US Supreme Court has derailed researchers’ efforts to reinstate almost $2 billion in grants issued by the NIH. The court’s decision represents a remarkable reversal, allowing the Trump team to proceed with its science cuts.

Hearing that all 27 NIH institutes have been instructed to stop using "paylines" in funding decisions starting Oct 1. Order issued in the last 48 hours.

Using paylines means scientific peer reviewers control funding decisions.
Removing them allows more political interference. 🧪

And no, we don't just mean trans research as Trump keeps saying. We mean cancer research, Alzheimer's research, vaccine research, and all those other things that improve health and longevity.

It is so rare in today's polarized era to have the support of 70+ percent of the public against the Trump admiministration on anything. Universities have that—AND winning legal arguments.
