Research in primate brains has been essential for the development of brain-computer interfaces and artificial neural networks. New funding and policy changes put future such advances at risk, write Cory Miller, @movshon.bsky.social and Doris Tsao.

In 1956, Jim Watson told my father, a brown man, that he would never get a job at Harvard and it was a miracle he had been admitted . Harvard's Board of Trustees saw it differently & appointed dad as an Assistant Professor and Director of the Harvard Agassiz Observatory BEFORE he finished his Ph.D!

Great to be in Toronto for the Second AG meeting for @tridentpct.bsky.social where our 🐁 molecular and cognition core will show what we are up to in the last 2 years facilitated by @touchscreencog.bsky.social and we will continue to learn about our organoid and marmoset models.

Oh yeah? Big deal. Ontario just raised its electric rates by 20-40% after killing off all its green energy projects a couple of years ago.
Australia has so much electricity from solar power that it is going to start offering free electricity to everyone for at least three hours during the day as the wholesale price of power goes negative

Australia's extensive solar power penetration makes so much energy that the government wants to offer free electricity at peak hours.

I would also say thanks to @picardonhealth.bsky.social who elevated this on a national and public stage. MP’s noticed that. He is a gem!
The 🇨🇦 Standing Committee on Science and Research passed a modified resolution this afternoon that the requested ricouncil applicant and reviewer data can be aggregated and anonymized. Thanks to the many researchers who signed letters pointing out legitimate data privacy concerns. 👏👏

I think I found a way to finance my core facility now. I own an extremely valuable original cerebellum painting that hangs in my office and that was painted and gifted by my former student @kathrynmanning.bsky.social, now a PI at @sickkidsto.bsky.social. @raynorproject.bsky.social

It’s hard not to feel insulted by the Canadian federal budget’s implication that researchers currently working in Canada aren’t good enough, so they’ll spend a bunch of taxpayer money to bring in “top talent” from elsewhere.

As a not terribly motivated grade 10 student in PG County, MD, a work-study term at Goddard Space Flight Centre opened my eyes to amazing technologies, my first exposure to computers and space. This is tragic. How many more kids like me will lose these opportunities?

And that’s a wrap. Our second annual AGM for @tridentpct.bsky.social is over. Thank you to all our trainees, faculty and advisors. And a HUGE ❤️ to my admin core (L-R) Sarah, Sriram and Sherry for pulling this off at the Ivey DKJ Centre in Toronto. Take a few days off !

This is important. It means the Trudeau era increases to the Tricouncils are preserved, but with a bit of a haircut. Funding will go up, just not by as much. At least till the hordes of researchers from abroad come.
We've been told by Finance that the 2024 budget commitments are intact, minus the $83 million. This is much better than I had been expecting.
2/ This matters enormously for granting councils. is the announced $83M cut from the 2024-25 baseline (which would be a real cut) or from the fiscal framework in which big instance were promised building up out to 2027-28 (which would mean a smaller rate of increase but not a cut)?
November 4, 2025 at 11:53 PM
Wait till they find out all of their private, personal information in their grants and reviews will be made public.🙄
Canada has what the world wants — the resources, the ambition, and the ideas.

Budget 2025 invests $1.7 billion to attract new talent, catalyse new research, and unlock our full economic potential.
November 4, 2025 at 11:31 PM
Just remember, the Liberals supported this too. If they think this will attract more researchers to Canada, they are smoking the dope they legalized. And once again, just like animal research, why is it @picardonhealth.bsky.social who needs to raise this publicly and not @u15ca.bsky.social

Now it’s real. Psyched to give this lecture at my own institution. Every 2nd year seems to be a non-Nobel laureate, so I fit the bill!! The very first lecture I gave at @lhsccanada.bsky.social and @westernu.ca was in that Auditorium, almost 32 years ago.

"Stacked plots worked as well in radio astronomy as they did in post-punk artworks (like Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures album cover) due to their origins as a subclass of astronomical images particularly useful in visualizing hidden connections [between] signals [and] noise."
