I was sad to learn that Jane Goodall died today, but happy to learn about Gary Larson being attacked by a chimpanzee named Frodo.

A lot of people think that every international student admitted means one fewer spot for domestic students, when the opposite is more likely true - the tuition revenue international students bring allows public universities to provide substantial discounts to domestic students, improving access.

Apparently I've been singing along with REM correctly all these years
Any other lyrics— don’t even try chronic town murmur or reckoning btw— just form vowels and syllables, and mean it

I've included this poem by Joseph Fasano in all of my syllabi this year. It says so much that our students need to hear.

Extremely disappointing & cowardly. The American Psychological Association is rescinding diversity requirements. Not due to any actual mandate from the federal government, but only because it may *someday* face pressure from the government www.nytimes.com/2025/03/27/h...
Under Pressure, Psychology Accreditation Board Suspends Diversity Standards

“Hello Senator [their name], my name is [your name] and I live in [city, state]. I am calling to urge you vote NO on the continuing resolution. Elon Musk and DOGE are withholding funds that congress had mandated to be spent. Unless they are stopped, the resolution will just let that continue.”
Dems across the country can stop this in its tracks. but they've only got about 48 hrs to do it. I explain how below.
What Mike Johnson is calling a "clean CR", i.e., funding bill, is really an Elon licensing deal, free 6 months to keep up his wilding spree which has already gutted the VA, slashd social security, cancer cure research and more. Johnson needs Ds help to pass it. talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/will-...

I attended the #standupforscience NYC with 3 of my undergrads. Great turnout, and dynamic, inspirational speakers ranging from grad students to physicians to former directors of NIH. Cheers to the organizers for putting together a terrific event.

I got my start in research through a predoctoral IRTA at NIMH. It was an incredible training experience. This year I’ve written a half dozen recommendations for students trying to get that same start in their careers who are now going to be shut out for petty, ignorant reasons.
Parents, college students:
Please be aware that NIH wants to interview and hire IRTAs - postbacs, PhD students, and postdocs this year, but we are currently banned from doing so. We may have a gaping hole.
You can and should contact your Senator and House member in your home state.

I had a conversation with my undergraduate Clinical Research Methods class today about how grants work. Only one of them had even heard about the NIH cuts, but they all immediately got how devastating this is to research and clinical care. These cuts need to be front page on every news source.
