(🧵) For no particular reason, a (likely not) brief thread on why the shutdown of the US government, with the resulting furlough of public servants, does not happen in Canada.

TL;dr: a combination of our Westminster system plus standing statutory authority works to prevent this from happening.

Carney will be invited to form a govt by the GG.

Carney will be the Prime Minister-designate during a transition period (could be really fast or a few days).

Once the transition is over, Trudeau formally resigns as Prime Minister, and Carney is appointed PM.

Prorogation related procedural fact:

The date indicated in the proclamation issued by the Governor General for the opening of a new session can be moved to an earlier date by means of another proclamation.

This means that the next LPC leader could meet with the GG and ask for such a change.
