The Trump regime is working to deter dissent.

Anyone who goes against Trump could end up on a target list.

This is having a chilling effect on five major pillars of society — universities, science, the media, the law, and the arts.

It's straight out of the fascist playbook.

A study from @brookings.edu “The inheritance of black poverty: It’s all about the men” found that almost half of black teenagers in the USA grow up in the bottom quintile of the income distribution and that black men (due to starting from a position of extreme disadvantage) have low income-mobility.

The great point Ezra makes in this episode is that, if AGI is really the biggest revolution in history and is coming in the next few years, why aren't the policy discussions more urgent and detailed? Policymakers just kinda shrug and say they don't know what to do...

US appears set on crushing Ukraine capacity to force Zelensky to submit. Never mind that this is a bonfire of leverage versus Russia, which has every reason to believe it can dictate terms or reject a ceasefire in the knowledge that Trump is likely to blame Ukraine. Criminally bad negotiating.
Bad, bad news. Unnecessary, punitive, vindictive. "The US has cut off intelligence-sharing with Kyiv in a move that could seriously hamper the Ukrainian military’s ability to target Russian forces, according to officials familiar with the matter." www.ft.com/content/c58f...

More than three billion people in the world do not have access to modern energy sources, such as electricity, for cooking.

Instead they have to rely on solid fuels, such as crop waste, wood, and coal, that cause indoor air pollution. This pollution kills millions of people every year.

The blues guitarist who invented the phrase "woke"
The phrase "woke" has been a bit of a contentious issue, but blues legend Lead Belly actually started it years before the modern age.

Today is a reminder of Zelensky's superhuman stamina and strength. He deflected deeply unfair vile attacks in his 3rd language and kept it together while two bullies threatened his country's existence and repeated the tired but infuriating propaganda tropes of the aggressor.

The attempted mugging of a visiting president was about the world war that Musk, Trump, and Vance have chosen. If we attend to what Vance and Trump said yesterday, we can work our way to the unreason of American policy, and to the chaos that will follow.

Trump and Vance act as if the problem is that Ukraine is resisting an ongoing Russian invasion. The problem is the ongoing Russian invasion. If they want to use American power to stop the war, apply it to the aggressor. Abusing the victim is not going to end a war of aggression.
