With the North Tyneside Public Transport Users Group (@northeastptug.bsky.social), we asked all the mayoral candidates a series of questions about public transport and active travel.

We received responses from 6 out of the 7 candidates: streetlifentyneside.org.uk/2025/04/13/p...

Back by popular demand! Join us this Friday, 28th March, 6:30pm at Spanish City Plaza for a leisurely ride to Tynemouth and back for drinks.

IMPORTANT: There is a short section on-road to bypass the ongoing works on the cycleway. Sunset is at 6:34 so lights are essential.

My first ride along one of the new sections of North Tyneside’s “seafront sustainable route” - decent width and separation here and good to see side road priority. Nice to have lots of extra zebras too. Enough people on foot, even on a grey day, to be grateful to no longer have share the path.

This could have been my daughter.

Hundreds of young people cycle along this route, abandoned by @ntcouncilteam.bsky.social after 4 years of planning.

How many more children will be injured (or worse) before the council decides to face the opposition, find design solutions and build a safe route?
A young person was knocked off his bike by a hit-and-run driver this morning outside John Spence School - exactly where the abandoned Preston Rd cycle path should have delivered him safely.

Who will be held responsible and who will respond, before this happens again?

So the first year of Wales 20mph default limit saw 26% fewer casualties on the countries roads.
That's an amazing drop and a lot less stress on the emergency services and NHS.
Can we have this in England too now? the evidence is clear that it saves lives.

This is the newest section of our new “seafront sustainable route” (along the North Tyneside coast).

It barely meets LTN1/20 for width (it’s two-way) and there’s only paint separating it from the footpath (hence the pedestrian).

Very disappointing.

Apropos of this, having recently had a week in NL - I cycled in strong winds, zero temps, driving rain, over steep bridges, up & down surprisingly long underpasses, across exposed countryside, through busy cities - and it was all pretty easy, because it was safe & convenient.

Infrastructure works!
A lovely Newsround piece with @annaholligan.bsky.social and some Dutch schoolkids telling us why Dutch kids cycle - because they have the infrastructure and because it’s fresh air, energising, non-polluting, good for the environment, liberating, exciting, happy & fun!

With seven in 10 children cycling to school in the Netherlands, Newsround's been looking at why it is such a popular means of transport.
