This report from @centreforcities.bsky.social highlights the current issues with transport integration that we hope @kimmcguinness.bsky.social is working to address. By better connecting bus, Metro, and rail, public transport can be made an easy and affordable first choice for many journeys.
With integrated modes, increased bus frequency and reduced journey times #Newcastle could see 170,700 more people connected to the city centre 📢

We contacted Newcatle City Council with @newcycling.bsky.social to ask whether the public realm around the new HMRC offices on New Bridge Street would be as forward-thinking as the artists impressions. We didn't receive a response. Now we learn that Blackett Street, 3 years on, remains "on pause".

"Introducing an alternative to the habitual car-dependent urban landscapes often causes loss aversion, irrespective of future benefits. The importance of political leadership to defend the principles until people have experienced the changes firsthand is one of the key findings of this study."
Just got an alert to this new thesis, which has new data supporting the reality of the Goodwin Curve

In October 2022 modal filters were installed on streets in Heaton as part of a trial.
Thanks to a permanent traffic counter it was possible to see what effect that had on one of the boundary roads.
Traffic was down every week, by ~500 vehicles per day.
Then the filters were removed...

Council's in the region are tying people in to car dependency by failing to deliver promised transport schemes, with £100 million of schemes delayed or cancelled.

Almost £100m of promised North East transport upgrades are off track
Cancelled or delayed schemes mean that huge underspends are forecast on a series of funds allocated to improve bus journeys, cycle routes, and other forms of travel around the North East

It's clear what the problem is on the Coast Road in Newcastle, where buses are frequently delayed by drivers.
Will the Movement Strategy that is due to be discussed by Cabinet next week address this, or will the problem be left for the future again?

It's been a busy day on the Tyne Bridge as it sees it's most efficient use of the year, with 60,000 people crossing in around two hours and road works to clear and reinstate to give the runners extra space.

The number 1 will be on diversion and please allow extra time for your journey if you're driving.

Access for walking and cycling will be maintained.

Some good news 👇🏽
The council have now opened this route. Thank you to those in the council and @mikecookson.bsky.social for getting this fixed. The signs are still in place but can be ignored.

Let us know if you see issues like this wherever you cycle. It can be fixed!
Still no update on this unfortunately. Some Cyclists dismount signs have been quickly put up.

This is discriminatory to those with mobility cycles and blocks larger cargo bikes.

A safe diversion needs to be in place or the fencing moved.

Just to confirm that we've not been consulted about these works, but have contacted Senior Officers within the Council tonight to try to get some answers.

There's no formal road closure, no planning consent for a project, no diversion. The barriers aren't Chapter 8 compliant.

It's unacceptable.
Somebody has fenced off the main cycle route from Heaton to the city centre, with no warning and no diversion.
It's possible to get though via the bin area of Shieldfield House then through a private car park back to the road.
Councillors are aware and are try to sort it.
