Microsoft's own research confirms something that was already pretty obvious: relying on a text generating machine to come up with answers erodes critical thinking, and is a method favoured by those who never liked doing critical thinking in the first place

NEW: In California, data center builders are erecting DIESEL generators to backstop AI computing.

Using a shortcut in regulations, the approved data centers will emit the same GHG as 284,390 cars, including diesel and grid-based electricity emissions. capitalandmain.com/as-californi...
As California AI Data Centers Grow, So Does Dirty Energy
Companies are using a shortcut to build ever larger centers that use diesel generators as an emergency power source.

Maybe it’s because I’m not a newspaper columnist but I genuinely cannot fathom how you can actually think “this guy is a misogynist, racist, and a sexual predator, but he’s right about trans people” without any self-reflection on whether you might be wrong about us

“Using generative AI for lesson plans, or feedback, or course management is, ultimately, not a route toward making individual faculty more productive and effective but is instead a direct path to obviating the human role in teaching.”

It's hard to imagine a more brutal illustration of climate injustice and a failed society than indentured teenage slaves being used to protect the homes of wealthy Americans.
These teenagers and young men — 95% of whom are Black, Latinx, or Filipino — earn between $2.20 and $4 per hour, plus an additional $1 an hour when they’re actively fighting fires, according to the DJJ. ⤵️

“In order to shoot off one email per week for a year, ChatGPT would use up 27 liters of water, or about one-and-a-half jugs… that means if one in 10 U.S. residents—16 million people—asked ChatGPT to write an email a week, it’d cost more than 435 million liters of water.”
AI doesn’t just require tons of electric power. It also guzzles enormous sums of water.

Occasional reminder that there’s no, “it’s too late, its over” for anthropogenic climate change. Every molecule of CO2 that doesn’t go into the atmosphere makes a difference. Preventing 0.1 degree of warming makes a difference. Every bit of climate resilience we build together makes a difference.

Hi pals. Today I wrote about the unsettling mismatches between what climate models say should be happening and what is actually happening. We're pushing the Earth past the limits of our physical understanding. This is a gift link: www.theatlantic.com/science/arch...

In 2020, only 3.6% of the world’s population lived outside their country of birth. People only leave their homes when they're desperate.

If conservatives really care about immigration, they would focus on stopping climate change. Because that's going to cause refugee numbers to skyrocket.
