There actually was a time when Alabama prisons weren't the drug & despair filled death traps that they are now. After speaking to people who have experienced this first hand & the decline in conditions in the last few years, it can be summed up in one word. Incentives. A thread. /1
The money extracted from families of prisoners is extortion. Canteen sales at ADOC in 2025 $33 MILLION. The new provider will be the same as the new meal provider. Which gives them a big incentive to starve inmates for meals to boost canteen sales - as we've seen in other states. It's all predatory.

Two months before Calvin Alexander’s parole hearing date, he was told he was no longer eligible.
Why? An algorithm had deemed the nearly blind 70-year-old, who uses a wheelchair, a “moderate risk,” barring him from speaking to the parole board.

An Algorithm Deemed This Nearly Blind 70-Year-Old Prisoner a “Moderate Risk.” Now He’s No Longer Eligible for Parole.
A Louisiana law cedes much of the power of the parole board to an algorithm that bars thousands of prisoners from a shot at early release. Civil rights attorneys say it could disproportionately harm B...

Across the U.S., parole boards are releasing fewer people than in 2019.
Does this look like a system that values bettering people and giving them a second chance?

In Alabama prisons the men are strip searched after family visits. I always wonder what kind of negative association they will have long term after being humiliated every time they see their loved ones.
Dehumanizing strip searches to punish immigration detainees who have visitors is very much designed to keep them isolated.
People in ICE Custody Face Invasive Strip Searches After Visits With Loved Ones
Some people decide not to participate in in-person visitation because they don't want to take off all their clothes in front of a guard.

Alabama apparently thought banning porn is more important than so many people dying in prison here that the DOJ said it was cruel and unusual punishment - and they don't say that about the death penalty. So they're saying it's worse to be in prison here than to be killed by AL DOC.

Alabama’s state’s inmate population has risen from 17,864 in October 2021 to 21,121 in August. Current prisons were designed to hold 12,115 people. That’s almost DOUBLE, 3 men in 2 men cells, 2 men in single man cells. Overcrowding makes every single thing in prison worse for staff & incarcerated.
Alabama has struggled with prison overcrowding for decades, and it’s set to worsen. New laws could push the number of incarcerated people up by nearly a third by 2030, straining public budgets and exacerbating understaffing. https://bit.ly/4nA3mZb

A 92yo man in an Alabama prison has been packing his bag each morning for YEARS thinking hes going home. He has dementia & inmates care for him. Today he died in prison without family because its a “security risk” to let a 92yo dying man w dementia see family. In Alabama cruelty is always the point.
