The money extracted from families of prisoners is extortion. Canteen sales at ADOC in 2025 $33 MILLION. The new provider will be the same as the new meal provider. Which gives them a big incentive to starve inmates for meals to boost canteen sales - as we've seen in other states. It's all predatory.

A 92yo man in an Alabama prison has been packing his bag each morning for YEARS thinking hes going home. He has dementia & inmates care for him. Today he died in prison without family because its a “security risk” to let a 92yo dying man w dementia see family. In Alabama cruelty is always the point.

There actually was a time when Alabama prisons weren't the drug & despair filled death traps that they are now. After speaking to people who have experienced this first hand & the decline in conditions in the last few years, it can be summed up in one word. Incentives. A thread. /1

Exposing the incarcerated to trauma, violence, neglect & destroying their family connections doesn't make us safer when they get out. And 95% get out. We need to ask our politicians, do we want them to be productive citizens when they get out or too damaged to function or be safe around? #Alabama

Family visitation for inmates dramatically decreases recidivism & is a huge incentive for good behavior. Alabama has all these initiatives & task forces trying to decrease recidivism while the ADOC cancels, shortens & discourages visits. When are they going to get on the same page? #Alabama

"Be glad it's not worse" is an unacceptable answer involving the incarcerated. When the Alabama Department of Corrections says that about living conditions, safety, family visits, medical neglect… it's a thinly veiled threat & rationale to treat inmates any way they want because "it could be worse."

With the Alabama Department of Corrections cruelty is always the endgame. While visiting a prison I saw a dying woman in a wheelchair with cancer who traveled from states away told she couldn't wear her head covering & then was refused her visit with her son after it had been approved weeks earlier.

Children are not adults. That's why we don't let them vote, get married, buy tobacco, drink or even rent a car. When they commit a crime they don't magically become mature enough to do all those things. Stop trying them as adults. #JuvenileJustice #CJReform

I've been visiting my LO in an Alabama prison for decades. And every single visit the staff act like they had NO IDEA they had a visit that day. There's no one who knows the computer system to check visitors in. There's no woman officer to search the women visitors. There's no officer to supervise/1

Just paid $15 for 50 naproxen for my loved one in prison. I can get 200 naproxen for $9. That's 7 TIMES more expensive. These private companies exploit the families that can least afford it. How can we have meaningful prison reform when so many are making such extreme profits? #Alabama

They found a gun in a maxsecurity prison in Alabama. The ADOC has turned off the wall phones so that every reformed man that follows the rules can't contact their family, while the criminals with the gun & contraband phones freely post about it all on social media & talk to their families. #Alabama

Call Gov. Ivey & tell her not to reappoint Gwathney to the Parole Board. She's a no vote 98% of the time. Anyone who can’t find more than 2% of eligible applicants to deserve parole & denies parole to people in wheelchairs isn't worth our tax dollars. Gov. Ivey 334.242.7100 #Alabama

Alabama Parole chair Gwathney votes no 4 people paralyzed & in wheelchairs. She votes no 98% of the time! That's not doing her job. The ParoleBoard doesn't follow their own guidelines. They claim to hold people n prison accountable when they aren't accountable to anyone. #Alabama
