Extraordinary courage from Ahmed al Ahmed, a Muslim, 43-year-old father of two, who bravely risked his life to save his neighbors celebrating Hanukkah.

Praying for his full & speedy recovery.

And so deeply inspired by his example.

It truly breaks my heart that after we went through COVID, the burnt out OG public health workforce *and* new grads/early career folks who went into it all bc they saw how vital it was during a pandemic, are now being fired, losing their funding, & ultimately shown how little our field is valued

This change will accomplish one thing - kill medical research in US academic institutions.
That's not hyperbole and the best way I can explain this to the lay public.
Slashing indirect costs to 15% is a move to destroy the academic enterprise.
Pass it on.

Thanks, Bryan. We all need to stand together.

People say "We are all in the same boat", but that is wrong. We are all in the same storm!

Some of us are lucky to be in a boat, but others in our community are in the water, and we need to help rescue them as we can.
We are with you on this. 100%

Profoundly important essay

By constantly reacting to Trump’s fascist acts, we are losing our minds

We must instead find passions of our own, imagine a better world, and mobilize & organize

I suspect in many cases it was also because people couldn’t yet face the reality of what they were dealing with. And they didn’t want to be the outlier who jarred everyone’s world view (speaking as someone who ended up playing that role in quite a few interviews in spring 2020).

Current events in the US bring back echoes of early COVID, when there was reluctance to call it a ‘pandemic’ or say the world was already in a really bad place. I suspect this reluctance was partly because people didn’t want to encourage fatalism, as if events were inevitable. But…

Reminder: They're trying to demoralize you, and they're doing a great job of it. Part of resisting is making time for joy despite the attempts to make you feel this is not the time for it. Love your people. Dig the art that speaks to you. Go to the places where life flows into you. You deserve joy.

As an infectious disease doc & public health advocate, the last time felt this demoralized and defeated was after my first round of duty on covid filled wards at peak of the pandemic. Today's assault on public health & the trampling of basic rights of marginalized groups feels just as devastating.

I honestly believe our most powerful position in a toxic time that feeds on cynicism, apathy,& despair is to genuinely care and act for a better world.

Cynicism is our enemy. We should check it, incl. on the left. It’s not intellectually superior. It’s the virus they’re trying to infect us with. NO

People are easier to break down if they think they are already ruined.

We are not there. Grateful to Carl for this post reminding me of that.

Don’t obey in advance & don’t surrender either. Do what you need to care for yourself & get ready to fight like hell for our profession & everyone’s health.

It could've been telegraphed in advance. The fear, uncertainty, chaos, and disruption are the point.
