We, the people, are the goddamn rule book. We always have been. And if we stick to it, instead of giving up, we will prevail.

I suspect in many cases it was also because people couldn’t yet face the reality of what they were dealing with. And they didn’t want to be the outlier who jarred everyone’s world view (speaking as someone who ended up playing that role in quite a few interviews in spring 2020).
