I heard about MRM’s terrible contract and I have heard that individuals have negotiated a more reasonable contract. But MRM didn’t change their boilerplate.

SFF writers can’t unionize, but I won’t send stories to them until their contract is fair for every writer. Solidarity is solidarity.
Did you read my post from last week about how contract woes caused me to withdraw an accepted story from F&SF, ending my 54-year quest to be published in that magazine? But wait (as the saying goes) — there's more! Scroll down at the link for an update. www.scottedelman.com/wordpress/20...

Hoffmann, 37, lives in a space station in the heart of the Virgo Supercluster where robots crawl in their kitchen and "The Saint of Bright Doors" and Jung's "Man And His Symbols" - two books they were reading while teaching critical AI literacy to undergrads - sit under their sparkly viewport.
Pratt, 48, lives in a lost city in the heart of Antarctica where shoggoths crawl into her kitchen and the Book of Azathoth and and "De Vermis Mysteriis" — two books she was reading while she was writing “Arkham Canto" — sit on her dining room table.
The credulity.

Employers are always handwringing about autism accommodations in the workplace and I gotta tell you: ear defenders and quiet workstations are the least of your problems. What autistic people really need is *whispers* for other people to do their actual jobs.

Convincing you to read my novel with the first sentence. Share yours if you want.

OK sure, it's a novella, but perhaps you would like to see the opening for THE DROWNED MAN'S DAUGHTER? bookshop.org/p/books/the-...

Sometimes I wonder if our many years of jokes about writers hating writing and doing anything but writing, etc, have convinced people that the writing part is the hurdle and the goal is just to have a thing in hand. But I am here to tell you: the writing is the best part. The act is the thing.

🔖 I finished @ada-hoffmann.bsky.social’s “The Outside” today, which was a fabulous read from @angryrobotbooks.bsky.social.

So much so that I’ll be progressing into book two in November 🤗

There’s some great rep. that’s really involving. Also, Akavi’s a massive knob!

Have you ever noticed that you can tell where the midpoint is in a lot of books because it's where the main character literally gets knocked out for a bit so that the narrative can pause

I often have one character who cusses and another character who gently chides them for cussing :P
Assuming your target audience are adults, do your characters cuss?

Thread, up and down.

I don't know how many times in my life someone has become ready to talk openly or think about who they are because they saw me being open about it first. And that's mostly when I wasn't especially trying.

Imagine what can happen if you try.
If you talk instead to the people in the crowd who are hiding because they think they're alone, and you tell them you know they're there and they're not alone, you get instant energy. You can build a group that is big enough to shift the norms in the larger population. Bottom-up change.

One of the items I bought from the Ottawa Cat Rescue booth last week was the Considerate Cat Tarot, Volume II - and now that I've got a moment to breathe, I'm getting to know the deck.

The news story about Rowan would be a crime story - local shady trans man gets busted for smuggling or for a heist he was trying to do.

The news story about Kelli would be, "Beloved television writer turns out to be secretly Problembatic"

In 50 minutes I am going to go moderate the Can*Con panel "He's Babygirl: Reclaiming the Queercoded Villain" which I think everyone is THE MOST hype for out of everything I have ever done at a convention, ever :D

I don't usually repost these things, but Vale is a dear friend, and I'm already on their Patreon at the highest tier.
Last week was awful. There was a death on my birthday, and I found out my SNAP benefits went from $290 to $23

It was a bad time

So, if anyone wants to join the Patreon or Kofi, even for a month, I'd be thrilled.

There's microfiction, and updates, and tarot/oracle readings. Maybe other things too.
