Do not cite an academic paper unless you’ve read it
AI Is Inventing Academic Papers That Don't Exist -- And They're Being Cited in Real Journals
Academic articles from authors using large language model are creating an ecosystem of fake research that threatens human knowledge itself.

Bold early pitch for next director general of the BBC here
A radio programme like the Shipping Forecast but it’s called Bin Day and it just reads out every single council in the country’s bin schedule

Generous of them, but a logistical nightmare I imagine
🌿☕Good lovely morning🌞

Seagulls have supraorbital salt glands behind their eye sockets, allowing them to consume seawater & still maintain a healthy electrolyte balance. Their function is similar to kidneys, allowing survival without access to fresh water

They share these glands with penguins🐧 🐧🐧🌿

I already have them though. So they go through the washing machine when they’re get too gross, which probably beats sending them to landfill. And they do last.
If you want to reduce plastic use, avoid yellow kitchen sponges like these. They're made of plastic, can't be recycled, don't break down in landfill – and release microplastics into the sea. Eco-friendly, compostable alternatives are available – see: bit.ly/42rwUOX

At the back of your kitchen cupboard is something pickled or preserved in a jar that you were given for Christmas several years ago that you’ve never quite felt like eating.

Throw it out now.

Contract law and AI: a thread from one of my favourite non-lawyer follows on here.
I just received a contract on Docusign for review and signing, and it offered to give me an AI-generated summary that I could read instead to save time.

That's AN AI-GENERATED SUMMARY ***OF A CONTRACT***, in case you need to let that sink in.

Genuinely suspect we'll eventually realise that consuming all media through AI summaries is the cognitive equivalent of consuming all your body's essential nutrients through 'carefully designed' powders/drinks.

Technically do-able, but nobody who exists like that is enjoying life.
Really a sad way to go through life www.nytimes.com/2025/06/27/b...

We found that AI tools - both general like #ChatGPT and research-specific like #Elicit - lack the reliability, relevancy and accuracy to summarise research for teachers. This is important because we have been sold the idea that AI will make research more accessible.
I am delighted to announce that my new paper with @darrenmacey.bsky.social is now published, entitled 'All sizzle, no steak: AI tools are not able to act as credible knowledge brokers by summarising evidence in mathematics education'
