This distinction is critically important and rarely used by tech journalists.

All of the good stuff we’re seeing from AI: medicine discovery, energy demand management, etc. are machine learning + big data.

LLMs are for cheating, bad poetry, stealing art, deepfakes, and worsening mental health.
Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

The equitable decarbonization rich nations should aspire to achieve.

“Pakistan's rooftop solar generation will for the first time exceed power demand on the country's electrical grid during daytime hours in some major industrial regions next year, a senior government official told Reuters.”

Carbon monoxide poisoning feels like a common illness at first.

Headache, dizziness, nausea, tiredness.

If symptoms get better outside and worse at home, it could be CO.

Do not ignore early signs.

I'm really glad renewable technology development doesn't depend on the COP negotiations.

Petrostates, fossil fuel companies, and their lackeys can sabotage diplomacy, but it's becoming increasingly transparent what they do is simply evil, while we will ditch fossil fuels anyway.
COP30 BREAKING NEWS: The likely final text of the "global mutirão" has been published, ahead of the closing plenary

It’s a sign of how insane the news cycle is these days that this historic failure of government policy got just one day of news coverage this week.

Not saying that’s right or wrong, but it’s astonishing how quickly the agenda moves on these days.
BREAKING: UK’s response to Covid was “too little too late”. Acting faster could have saved 23,000 lives in England according to the public inquiry.

Boris Johnson presided over a “toxic, sexist, chaotic culture” in No10, where rule-breaking seriously undermined public confidence.

Battery recycling is expected to become a cornerstone of the global energy transition as electric vehicles (EVs) and other battery-powered technologies become more widespread.

China holds a dominant position in both the pre-treatment and refining stages of battery recycling.

COP30 TEXT ANALYSIS: One way to read dense COP text is to focus on the verbs. These are helpfully italicised – and for good reason.

MOSTLY INACTIVE: Carbon Brief analysis of the “global mutirão” text finds 69 inactive verbs, requiring no action, against 32 active verbs.

That said, those petrostates that keep blocking a more ambitious agreement are enjoying the most pyrrhic of victories. Climate impacts will hit them too and the global clean tech boom will start to curb fossil fuel demand. They are putting themselves on the wrong side of history in every sense.

The positive take, which has some merit, is that there is a critical mass of countries that want a roadmap away from fossil fuels and signs climate adaptation is finally being taken more seriously. The global clean tech boom will continue and fossil fuel demand will plateau and fall.

Smart Tariffs are a game changer for the financial benefits of heat-pumps, household batteries and battery electric vehicles.

We've cut our household energy, heating and transport costs to 39% of what they were before we fully electrified our house and car.

The primary reason is Smart Tariffs.
NEW RESEARCH:

Demand flexibility becomes more and more attractive.

We found a whopping 480 smart tariffs and services across Europe — a 3x increase since our 2021/2022 study.

To give an idea of how damaging this change is, a typical dual fuel household will see their bill rise by £2.50 in January.
A household using an electric storage heater - already most at risk of fuel poverty - will see a £100 increase. That is deeply unfair and needs to be addressed
