Moving over to bluesky from twitter/x!

I'm a PhD student studying aquatic biogeochemistry, with a background in geography - my research focuses on riverine/aquatic carbon cycles and factors that influence/mediate them.

In my free time I badly play a variety of sports (latest: roller derby!)

Watching disabled people around the world mourn Alice is a reminder of the good aspect of the internet. 30 years ago, few people outside of SF would ever have known Alice existed. I never would have met her. The internet connected us all. Let’s honor Alice’s memory by using that power and community.
My social media is wall-to-wall love for the incomparable Alice Wong, and I need more words. What captures sadness and/also affection for a community that knows what's been lost?
Alice could not eat food for years.

And yet at Christmas she would bake cookies and mail them to me—such was her desire to provide care for the people she loved.

This is a dramatic understatement of what UPenn agree to. They are also banning any and all Title IX protections for trans students and agreeing that trans people don't actually exist.

The proposed NOAA budget for 2026 contains the literal line:

Total, Climate Research: $0

The National Climate Assessment sites all went dark today after the Trump administration announced in April that it would allow the main contract supporting the report to expire.

With no backup plan for hosting the reports elsewhere, it appears they have just been allowed to disappear.

It's only Monday of the following week and...

❌ Entire 'proposed' climate budget zeroed out for FY26 in the DoC's budget justification for NOAA.
❌ The congressionally mandated (and paid with your taxpayer dollars) National Climate Assessment has just been removed from their website host entirely.

The US Global Change Research Program a next target of Trump's destruction campaign. My sources report that globalchange.gov will go dark Monday. NOAA is archiving the National Climate Assessment at NCEI.

Holy shit. I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say they’re trying to kill us all.

I’ve been in R for too long and forgot the real world exists (googled stack tables to remember the syntax and got this)

“If the freeze is not stopped, I might lose my house."

Some NSF-funded postdocs are having trouble paying rent and credit card bills because their salaries were paused this week, even though the federal funding freeze memo was rescinded.
