I know shockingly little about Thune because he rarely comes up, which is odd given he's the Senate majority leader.

I think this is the reaction a lot of people will have.

I remember a teacher explaining to me what math was actually for and it was like the final puzzle piece that connected dozens of ideas I'd been mulling over.
It felt like that scene in the old Karate kid where Miyagi shows Daniel *exactly* what the chores really were.

I have legitimately seen kids who absolutely need to know the practical use cases before being able to lock in. And they're not being obstinate. They don't know enough to know why this is important and absolutely want to have the dots connected they can't on their own.

But, on another note I'm actually glad you did this. I don't tend to talk about education policy or reform because I had a lot of unearned advantages in that regard and I don't think the opinion is usually worth adding...
But I do think kids need to have some of the "why learn this" explained.

Fun fact, after 9/11 me and my group of friends who our teacher called the Brain Trust because we were the 3 best students in the class all sat around trying to use our 6th grade knowledge of history and geography to figure out who did it and why.
We got close. Wrong. But close.

Hate that. The only thought I could really process yesterday as I worked through all of this was the reality that I knew people who would suffer and possibly die if the shutdown continued *and* people for whom the same was true if it ended and healthcare costs spiked.

OOOOOOH if this is for the reason I think you and I need to talk! Because I have thoughts I've mostly kept to myself.

It might be the irreverent vibes, it might be the humor but I kind of get Hawkeye from Mash vibes from you. Though without the creepy womanizing.

because she said she'd lost a ton of the strength she used to have.
Kenjutsu is not an upper body strength based practice! It's all technique, skill and timing. But it is still a physicality thing so what she was telling me was she no longer had confidence in her general physicality to fence!
