The Rocky Horror Picture Show opened on US screens 50 years ago today. Initially a major box office bomb, cult cinema outsiders and queer audiences quickly took up the film’s mantle and turned it into a unique and exciting way of engaging with the movies. Remember kids, don’t dream it—be it!!

Historically successful civil rights movements whose gains are also increasingly coming under fire in the US because the reactionary wing is going full scorched-earth.

We've seen this with MeToo 'going too far', or even 'CRT gone wild'. Stop legitimizing right-wing framing as normal politics.
another thing McBride points out is that historically successful civil rights movements were willing to compromise. which is very true! but we’re not being offered a trade, we’re just being told to cede ground.
i listened to the Ezra Klein/Sarah McBride interview, and her entire position revolves around a completely unproven assertion: the idea what caused the shift in polls away from trans rights is the rhetoric of the left. that might be true, but i haven’t seen any real evidence for it.

I think at some point we have to stop indulging the fiction that conservatism is a legitimate political tendency and isn't simply a grievance cult for those who value the ability to enact cruelty over their literal basic needs.

being gay, being trans, those are not choices. but coming out, living as trans or gay or queer, saying "no, i am different, i get to choose life, I get to make myself in my own image, i get to do the work of being myself," that is a choice. for some people, it's a choice that isn't safe to make.

The problem literally cannot be solved by women, and thinking it can is why you have cishet men stripping women's rights back until they are forced to marry lonely men and be the only emotionally present person in their lives. The solution is not primarily in making women treat you differently.

5. In 2022, Abbott also issued a directive mandating that the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services investigate parents who support their trans children for child abuse. In other words, the Governor seems to support parental rights, until it is a parent of a trans kid.
Transgender Texas kids are terrified after governor orders that parents be investigated for child abuse
Some experts doubt that classifying gender-affirming care as child abuse would hold up in court, but families still feel targeted by Gov. Greg Abbott’s new order

Texas Senate Bill 12, passed by the senate today, is lengthy. It prohibits teaching about sexual orientation or gender identity, prohibits "DEI practices" in K-12, and creates a "parental bill of rights" that, among other things, entitles parents to find out what's being taught in classrooms

more and more these days, I find myself thinking that you can accept the discipline of your political goals or you can accept the discipline of your resentments.
Seeing a lot of “But they don’t deserve…” And no, of course they don’t. What the fuck does that have to do with anything? The house is on fire. Pass a bucket to whoever wants to put it out. You can remind them what an ass they’ve been later.
