As we finish up the year, 404 Media will have stuff publishing over the holidays. Some horrible (you'll see on Xmas day), some fun. Subscribers will still get a story each day.

In the meantime, here's some of our best coverage this year, starting with Flock + ICE: www.404media.co/ice-taps-int...
ICE Taps into Nationwide AI-Enabled Camera Network, Data Shows
Flock's automatic license plate reader (ALPR) cameras are in more than 5,000 communities around the U.S. Local police are doing lookups in the nationwide system for ICE.

"Metropolis does not use license plate recognition,” Morrissey said. “Instead, our computer vision platform is trained on a comprehensive and proprietary data set to recognize vehicles with a ‘vehicle fingerprint’ based on its unique characteristics..."
Two of the city's largest parking garages are now using artificial intelligence to recognize your car
The city and the new operator, Metropolis, promise a smooth experience from the technology, but customers in other cities have filed class-action lawsuits over the system.

It’s insane that in about 3 years we’ve essentially nuked the sum total of human knowledge by making truth indistinguishable from falsehood or unfindable amidst the rubbish

If they’re going to do this, incredibly frustrating they’re not using ParkMobile since they know community members already use that because of UVA. It’s a national company that everywhere I’ve traveled has used. Why are we adding another hassle?
Beginning Tuesday, December 16, you'll need to create an online account for your car to park in the Market Street and Water Street garages on the Downtown Mall.

This is the classic tech non-solution to a non-problem. It makes the garage unusable for a solid 10-25% of the population who aren’t tech savvy, or don’t have signal, or just have privacy concerns.

All for the imagined benefit of being able to drive out without stopping (who cares??)

This got me thinking….how do we as a society normalize pumpkin pie as a breakfast option at restaurants year round? Who will be the change we want to see in the world?
It turns out Mina and I have identical pie takes (literally had home made pumpkin pie for breakfast this morning before kids woke up).
So my pie take is there are no bad pies, but some pies have to be eaten a certain way:

1. Pecan: Always good

2. Fruit: Must be homemade. Otherwise bad.

3. Pumpkin: Best eaten cold at 7 am standing over a sink before everyone wakes up

Day after tomorrow, y'all.
Don't sleep.
A benefit for blueridgebailfund.org.
My 54th birthday. The year I mark 2/3s of my life living in Cville, and 1/2 of my adult life sober.
Stop by early for grilling, music, friends, new friends, art, hugs.
This isn't a metaphor! Goddamn, this is real!

Yes my neighbors always love it when I buy out their kids daycare and then shut it down and leave it vacant lol.

They’re always saying stuff like:

“Jake you’re such a good neighbor”

“Jake you’re both great and good”
If UVA gets FEI instead of CCS, it’ll be the equivalent of taking tens of millions of dollars from the city.

Imagining looking at a camera with a straight face and saying that’s the sort of thing an “incredibly good neighbor” would do.

It’s gaslighting, pure and simple.
