Because Stalin read his history books and remembered what happened with the Decembrists. This very much actually happened, rejecting it because you want to believe in the good intentions of Russian autocrats is denying factual reality. And they 'liberated' those people right to the Gulag.

Our government was founded on a revolt against taxes and importation duties on goods like tea and paper. The price hikes on eggs alone would've turned James Madison into El Chapo but all the paranoiacs stockpiling ammunition and burying gold bars in their backyards have nothing to say about it.
