How is environmental history doing in Asia? It's thriving! Read Mu Cao's beautiful account of the Asian Association for Environmental History (AAEH) conference in Japan last year.

AAEH is a biennial conference, so keep an eye out for the next one in 2027!

It's now January 24th in Hong Kong, which means it's Chow Hang-tung's 41st birthday. First arrested on June 4th, 2021, for promoting an unauthorised assembly on the 32nd anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, she has spent her 37th, 38th, 39th, 40th and now 41st birthday behind bars.
Have decided to post daily re Hong Kong heroes & heroines. 1st up: Chow Hang-tung. Activist, barrister, former vice-chairman of the HK Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China that organised Hong Kong's (once) annual June 4th candlelight vigils, and current political prisoner.

Eight years ago today, bookseller Gui Minhai was arrested again and later sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Chinese Communist government. Since January 2018, his family has been unaware of his whereabouts and health status.

N.B. Gui is a Swedish citizen who was "disappeared" in Thailand.
八年前的今天,书商 #桂民海 再次被捕,后被判刑10年;

Oooh I have some fun material here. One of the things HKers did to support the paper financially was to buy up classified ads, which became a whole new genre of soft-protest. A small thread -
A reminder that "Apple Daily" had difficulty getting advertisers because Leung Chun-ying pressured companies to not advertise in the pro-democracy newspaper when he was Chief Executive of Hong Kong.
In 2019, #AppleDaily implemented a subscription model, which peaked at 800,000 subscribers within 3 months. At a monthly fee of HK$50, this translates to HK$40,000,000 in monthly revenue, enough to cover operating costs & repay debts to #JimmyLai . #HongKong

Jimmy Lai turned 78 today. He is still behind bars -- specifically, in solitary confinement at a maximum security prison in Hong Kong -- and his national security law trial has yet to conclude.
Jimmy Lai Chee-ying. Billionaire businessman who is one of Hong Kong's most well known political prisoners. Born in Mainland China, he fled to Hong Kong during the Cultural Revolution. Pro-democracy and anti CCP, he's been behind bars since December 2020, and faces national security law charges.

Certainly within the university context it’s a clear sign than the system needs to change to become genuinely inclusive. It’s the lack of flexibility, the failure to allow divergence, that is pathologising.
"...these diagnoses are increasingly used by students & workers for organising to push back against oppressive systems & institutions of exploitation. The backlash against the expansion of these diagnoses is thus, in significant part, a ruling class backlash against a demand for change..."

I keep saying this in dept meetings
The first school to market itself as AI free is going to corner the market on people interested in actually learning. And I would not be surprised if rich families and the children of people creating this tech were the first movers.
My employer, Dartmouth College, today boasts it's 1st Ivy "to launch AI at an institutional scale." It is doing this by partnering--"more than a collaboration"--with Anthropic, a company that stole the books of many faculty, me included, which many of us are suing.

GovHK had a grand opportunity here to be part of a united community and be an instrument of goodwill to nurture that unity, and they just had to go and blow it, didn't they?

But then paranoia will do that. It's like they're so afraid of their own ppl that they see sedition plots everywhere. 1/5
