Good work by our senators!
NEW: Colorado Sens Hickenlooper and Bennet announce they're putting a hold on the Senate appropriations package to demand funding for NCAR.

Bennet said today that the Trump administration's move to dismantle the climate/weather lab is retaliation for Tina Peters' imprisonment.

President Trump is delivering on his promise of retribution against Colorado for the state's mail-in ballots and refusal to release his ally Tina Peters from prison.

The Trump team says it plans to close America's foremost weather lab: NCAR. @marshallglasses.bsky.social reports.

Reposting this great article ahead of a likely PSPS event here in Colorado on Wednesday. Let’s see if Xcel actually made the improvements it said it did. Coloradans are going to have to get used to this. #psps #cowx #wildfire
Xcel shut off power to 55K #Boulder-area customers last wildfire season, sparking chaos. This year, it says it’s more prepared — with clearer warnings, better outreach and rebates for backup power. Here’s what to know before the next PSPS. boulderreportinglab.org/2025/07/22/a...
Xcel shut off Boulder’s power last wildfire season. Here’s what’s changing.
The company’s communication drew sharp criticism. More than a year later, Xcel says it’s better prepared and residents should be, too.

Wildfires are getting more destructive in the US, especially in conifer forests of the Northwest...10% of exposed buildings were destroyed in 2002–2012, but this percentage more than tripled, to 32% in 2013–2022. Nice work @amandacarlson.bsky.social and co-authors! www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

This action also grounds the Very Large Air Tankers (VLATs) in the US. While this is the quiet part of the wildfire season, any long duration of this AD will cause issues for wildland firefighting
The emergency AD that grounded all the MD-11F after the UPS crash has been expanded to include DC-10s, too.

It also includes the KC-10A tankers, which were retired at the end of 2024.

So we going to go back to PL4 anytime soon? Seems like things have blown up quick again in CA/CO, with many moderate-sized fires popping up in the PNW. Could really use the MAFFS again + all of the contract resources. New CA start (Rosa Fire) unable to get helos as none available in the state

Has Lutnick actually visited a WFO? What does he think actually goes on at these (very important) offices?
PETERS: Will you commit to me that the forecasting office in Marquette will not cease its round the clock operation?

LUTNICK: You don't understand it yet because nobody has explained it to you. These are hard drive computers literally that nobody has seen in 25 years

PETERS: So the answer is no

The loss of 5 CIMTs will be felt massively if we reach PL4/5 this year. The risk to our communities, forests, public lands, and economy, cannot be understated.
Due to DOGE cuts, RIFs and early retirements, the Forest Service has lost 1600 red-carded individuals and five complex incident management teams (the teams that manage the large, complex incidents that you see on the news) ahead of what is expected to be an active wildfire season.

Greensburg 2007 are some of the first EF5 tornado damage photos I remember seeing as a kid. Can only hope they make it through this one ok
NOOOOOOOOO Greensburg doesn’t need that! 😰

A confirmed large and extremely dangerous tornado is moving towards the vicinity of Greensburg, KS, which was infamously leveled in 2007 by an EF5 tornado.
