I'm well overdue to subscribe, right as I put the finishing touches on a trailer that Derek's advice was super helpful for*

(*it's still not very good but it's way better than it would've been without his YouTube channel lol)
Looks like this one is going to be 6000 words about ~30 of my favorite game trailers from 2025!

A small handful from The Game Awards made it onto the list at the last second 👀

Keep those skills sharp! These companies cannot keep burning money forever, and as soon as folks have to pay a ton of money to create slop that no one will work with, they'll abandon it for skilled labor. That's the dream anyway lol.
I work in video production, which means everyone around me uses AI. It’s all people talk about. Clients use AI concept art to pitch a project and then expect me to match it with my work. Won’t pay for stuff because they can just generate it.

When I using steamcmd (from brew) to upload a Mac .app from @godotsteam.com, the depot seems to upload fine but the download on my Mac is 0B after I publish. Tutorials like "it just works!" 😂

Anyone in #godotEngine community deal with this before? Probs something in my steamworks depot settings...

What's the over-under on this only being AI and NFT bros who think there's nothing wrong with a little "being one of the most fucked up places to go rn" energy in their games conferences?

I truly wish I had the funds to afford a proper creative to help me out sometimes, but while I don't have funds I'll save money by... Using my terrible art skills to create something cursed instead of relying on the plagiarism machine 👍
It's frustratingly become way too common for commercial clients/corporations to use GenAI for reference, go to creatives because of course your shitty LLM can't give you something actually useable and then get upset that creatives can't turn around deliverables in 30 minutes.

Hell yeah my trailer is only like 65s so I'm sure they'll forgive my feet for lookin' like they do and give me a spot!
A 3 minute trailer at the The Game Awards costs millions of dollars, but a 3 minute trailer at the Hard Drive Game Awards presented by Call of Duty Black Ops 7 only costs a few feet pics
The Game Awards is bigger and more expensive than ever. Even some nominated developers are getting priced out. Our report: https://kotaku.com/game-awards-geoff-keighley-tickets-trailers-clair-obscur-2000652243

one day I'll make my Monster Rancher inspired game... One dayyyy...
I like the concept of "retro" indie RPGs as much as the next guy, but why is it that they're inspired by the same three games (Chrono Trigger, EarthBound, FFVI) 99% of the time?

Give me something more out there. Something more Bahamut Lagoon or Tactics Ogre.

This is awesome. Print is such a good way to get around a bunch of distribution (and surveillance!) mechanisms that seem otherwise mandatory in this very gross economy. It is really nice to see it spelled out like this.

It works great for us, and it'll work great for other places!
404 Media is making a print zine! About the surveillance technologies used by ICE. 16 pages, riso printed. Shipping early January. Features reworked versions of our best reporting and a few new things. We're very excited! And hope to do more if people like it:

I like when I feel like I'm losing it for a long time then I just randomly come across a post that, at best, supports my weird little biases. This has been making me nuts for a long time!
Can't remember if it was this bad before COVID but I'm seeing an alarming spreading of what I'll call Airport Behavior to other public places. Obliviousness to other people's existence, ineptitude at navigating the environment. "Is this your first time at the grocery store" type stuff

At about $60K that's about 128 million graduate team indie games, at $150K about 500,000 small indie games, at $300K about 250,000 mid-size debut indie games, or at around $950K about 110,000 indie games by a team of more experienced devs.

There are a total of 110,000 indie games on Steam.

I watched about 8s of the video and went "yeah AI..." ... But I don't know how to explain "it just looks wrong" to people.

This thread does a great job if you're willing to look for these sorts of things. Issue is that most folks aren't willing... Still, check it out! Improve your mental models!
Thread on how to detect ai in that viral dog video
Yeah, I mean, I'm critical of any video nowadays that is trying to elicit an emotional response, especially when it's asking for subs at the end. It's weird that all the people seem to end up with the dog they want. And shelters are overflowing, where are the rooms full of people wanting to adopt?

Pretty sure the only Destiny seasons I played were ones that Dr. Hazel wrote for... Please please don't use AI or all-junior staff to save money when you can hire good writers.
Reminder that I'm still looking fulltime or contract work as a senior writer or narrative designer. If you need someone who can write sharp characters, poetic prose, and emotional stories, I'm available! You can find my portfolio here: www.hazelmonforton.com
It's #portfolioday! I'm presently a senior narrative designer at Blizzard, but before that I was at Bungie and Arkane. I wrote for the Writer's Guild award-nominated Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, and a bunch of critically acclaimed seasons and expansions in Destiny 2.

I wrote this huge, 3,000-word or so deep dive into the state of game actors’ contracts in the UK, which is a hot mess of exploitation, AI clauses and chaotic rate calculations.

And no one read it.

But you really, REALLY should.

Contracts for game actors are a nightmare in the UK
SAG-AFTRA's strike might have sorted things out in the US – but UK contract negotiations are still a mess of exploitation, AI clauses, and non-standard rates
