you should play fourmiworld (free) and get the wandereyes writings dlc (cheap) *before* you start so you, too, can feed your inner flavor text and bestiary sicko. i didnt even realize the flavor text wasnt in the game by default, its like the main big thing im enjoying about it lmao

Likewise, there are Japanese PC games I only got working in an emu because of what I read in manuals. If you're stuck and can read Japanese, try to track that manual down. And if you're a fan TL group working in these genres, seriously consider scanlating the manual. Your audience will thank you.

A lot of older Japanese games—including, yes, dating sims—have similar reputations and 9 times out of 10, it's because you're attempting to play something without a manual that was never intended to be experienced that way. For games with no online guides, the manual may well be your only lifeline.

i think in fiction i'll always prefer "ritual magic" to "cast a spell magic". i want there to be some kind of meaningful action taken. it doesnt have to be a specific mechanics-ized action, just some thing. draw a circle. lay out cards. arrange things, prepare things, sacrifice things, etc.
