Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
This day honours and remembers the children who were forced into Canada's Residential School system.
It was first observed as Orange Shirt Day in 2013 and was elevated to a statutory holidy for federal workers in 2021.

Peak Winnipeg Council Brain. We shouldn’t apply pressure on our own wound because someone with more resources should be doing it instead (never mind whether they get there before we bleed out)
Wyatt claims we "probably shouldn't" help out the Province on social housing. "They have more money", he insists.

Councillor Russ Wyatt railing at Supportive Housing re-zoning because of "scale". He thinks these 15-25 unit supportive homes are "too big" for the predominantly single family house neighbourhoods some are set for. This despite generous 20 foot side yards.

To be clear, we aren't building them... We are rezoning and contributing the land for the Province to build them, likely with the help of a development partner. Winnipeg, MB and supportive housing:
Warnings about homeless people and crime — countered by allegations of “un-neighbourly fear-mongering” — are being levelled as the city attempts to build supportive housing units in five Winnipeg neighbourhoods.

(Under normal circumstances, with density, a couple of those sites could house many more, but these supportive projects are deliberately small in order to ensure sufficient attention/capacity from onsite staff & support service).

Someone offline raised the issue of "lost parking" to me. Pains me to reply to it, but we are talking about roughly a dozen slots once it all shakes out. In other words, every lost slot is housing 1-2 people.

Disappointing that fearmongering literature against much needed supportive homes is being distributed in River Heights.

Attend a City info session next week & sign up to speak/send written comments for the Sept. 12th hearing to SUPPORT supportive homes!

Councillor Orlikow says "I don't believe in as-of-right". Orlikow also seems to argue that changes zoning rules to allow more different types of homes in more places is enforcing uniformity.

Rough map of estimate for lots affected by new restrictions coming from Councillor Mayes' successful Amendment Motion 1.

Rough estimate of the impact of Amendment Motion 1 Winnipeg City Council voted to water down HAF zoning changes.

This is on top of existing dilutions already done in the past, such as lower height limits & restricting multifamily around rivers & specific creeks.
By my calculations, the amendment reduces as-of-right units from 4 to 1 for over 9000 properties.
