West Broadway, Winnipeg. For bikes, transit, and livable urban planning. Wrangles data for a living. Wrangles my children when I’m not.
Taught the 6yo to solder.

After two tries he’s already better at it than I am.

100% exactly what I expected.

It’s an adorable flashing LEDs on a heart-shaped circuit board kit.

It took me over a month, but I’ve finally cracked Elo 400. That precipitous drop followed by a ladder step increase is what learning looks like.

Learning how to deal with the ‘trick’ easy-win openings that people of my rating like to try.

And learning how to blunder less often.

It’s 2003 in Winnipeg!

Apparently underpromotion isn’t in the algorithm.

Only because I always mess up and stalemate with the queen…

What if the parents got together and put all the kids in one big car? Let’s call it an ‘omnibus’ because that’s Latin for together.

Maybe shorten it to ‘bus.’ And since the logistics will be challenging, the school division can handle that part. Let’s call it a ‘school bus.’

One has a red snowsuit the other blue. They are making lines in the back yard in the snow.

I guess my kids are Tron.

Disallowance in the discourse! It’s been over 80 years, but the BNA’s highly centralized architecture (in theory) is back!
The Alberta gov’t is using the notwithstanding clause to attack trans youth & the PM has the ability to stop it.

He has constitutional tools. If he refuses to use them, he is choosing political convenience over the safety & rights of trans kids.

I’ve written Mark Carney calling on him to act now.

I answered this survey. It was a push poll and didn’t measure what it says at all. No opportunity cost, no alternatives. Bad polling.

Two of them. Connected. And then it moves across the landscape. Maybe scale it down and have seating for only one. And make a nice path for it to go on.

Each of them rotates, you know, it ´cycles.´ Let’s call it a bicycle. And the thing it rolls on a path.

I saw a novel-size book on the beginner reader section, and thought it was mis-shelved.

Nope - it’s a novel-size beginner reader book. The 6yo is so happy to have a big book like his brother.

What if they put a toll on the bridges? I’ll bet no one ever thought of that.

Is Alberta just daring the federal government to revive reservation and disallowance?

The last time it was used was probably against reactionary/racist Alberta legislation. (Anti-doukhbor laws, if I’m remembering correctly)

At a school event. The genius administration put the lost and found on tables on the way to where the event is.

One pair of mittens we didn’t even know was missing: found!

It's finally here. A history of the Nova Scotia lobster fishery.

Morton is truly an historian's historian, and from the installments I've seen, the book is going to have riches of social history, politics, economics, and even some marine biology.
