‘You can tell a lot about a society’s priorities by what it tries to protect itself from…. really I should say ‘a government’s priorities’.’

My piece in Solicitors Journal contrasting the treatment of Palestine Action and violent far-right movements.

Whom do we really need protecting from?
The UK’s treatment of Palestine Action contrasts starkly with tolerance of violent far-right movements

Welp, it’s time to publish this:

Bluesky Moderation has affirmatively dropped the ball with respect to allowing the transgender community on this site to protect itself.

I have a blocklist, titled “Transphobic”.

You can’t see it. Bluesky Community hid it.

j'adore traveling into London to visit a certain shop, only to get hit with one of these. I'm not naming the store because I'm sure there's a good reason, but arg!

(three beers later) Here's to the kitchen thinkers. The M&S tinnie drinkers. The bathroom queue winkers. The champagne flute clinkers. Here's to the people that make this gathering, a party.

When I worked in UK academia I recall hearing of a Japanese man who was baffled at how Britain had decided to run its universities like firms. “Why? Your universities are excellent and your firms are terrible.”
To repeat: "A country so stupid it actively trashes one of things it's good at and famous for."
Today's university slashing and burning is Edinburgh, where about 10% of the budget will be cut. There'll be another case every single day until UK govts actually do something. A country so stupid it actively trashes one of things it's good at and famous for.

Thanks you so so much @helenzaltzman.bsky.social and @martinaustwick.bsky.social for the Christmas Carol streams. Made the 5 hour drive back to the old homestead today a joy rather than a slog.

So my work told me to delete a post I made in the driver WhatsApp group, where I joked about unionising.
I shouldn't be surprised really, it's a crap job and a union would tear them to bits.

Sigh, I only agreed to the 60th because I thought then we'd be done with the 10th doctor! Now we'll never get him out from behind the skirting board.
