Modelling friends. My boss found a couple of bottles of isopropryl rubbing alcohol in the covid leftovers. Is this the stuff that can be used to clean airbrushes etc? Cheers.

New technique alert! (At least to me)

Dab on some slightly diluted matte medium and sprinkle in your rust pigments before chipping. Creates that bubbly paint kind of rust.

The British developed the powerful 183 mm L4 gun to combat the Soviet IS-3 heavy tank. A meeting was held #OTD in 1950 to figure out what vehicle could fit such a monstrous weapon. One of the results was the FV 4005 tank destroyer. #tanks #history #ColdWar

Thailand has a long tradition of ghosts in local folklore, so Thailand Post released its new Thai Ghosts issue on 31st October 👻 Could become a classic! 🙂👍
1. Mae Nak (a ghost with long, stretching arms)

4. Pret (hungry ghost)

There are Thai buildings and trees around the image and the whole illustration is set on a white background. Text in Thai and English around the edge of the stamp indicate the stamp's details and it's value is shown as 10 baht. These ghosts are "pret", or hungry ghosts. They are said to be very tall with distended stomachs, but they cannot satisfy their hunger because their mouths are just tiny pinpricks that emit a high-pitched whine. They are said to be the wandering spirits of people who were greedy in life, and now in death, they are condemned to wander the spirit world without rest.

TIL: spider silk was used in telescopic sights up to WW2.

I heard this on a podcast and had to follow up. The Wikipedia article on spider silk references Popular Science Monthly from April 1955: here are a couple of screenshots. Amazing work. Apparently the best silk was from black widows! 👀

The insect is grasped by a pair of tweezers as the almost-invisible thread is drawn out and carefully spaced on the U-shaped holder. It is then minutely inspected; the silk must be single filament and free of gummy droplets. A monochrome photo from a magazine article shows a technician, sitting at a desk full of tools, inspecting spider silk through a microscope. The caption to the photo reads: The Tommy dot itself is made under an 80-power binocular microscope. The dot made, Bob cements two short sections of spider silk at right angles across the reticle cell, or ring, of the telescopic sight. Final step is applying the dot to the junction of the two cross hairs, using a specially designed tool.

Have recently rewatched Band of Brothers & The Pacific, and just watched Masters of the Air...all I can think is how my dad and all those others who fought so bravely and sacrificed so much would be appalled and sickened by modern American GOP Nazi/Christo Fascism. Sickening!
