Hello! It's me! I'm Seán, dark fantasy writer and wizard enjoyer. Talk to me about kung fu movies, Souls games, and dungeon synth.

I write Shadows & Sorcery, a weekly dark fantasy flash fiction publication on Substack, plus a monthly serial novel, The Path of Poison. I also draw sometimes.

Yes, and it must, at all costs. Free will is the bedrock of the material world. Interesting to note: everything that happens to a person remains through reincarnations, little bits may carry over between lives, but nothing that would ever lead to any predetermination.
1/2
#FebruaryWorldbuilders Does free will exist in your world? If you have any kind of prophecy, fortune-telling, soulmates, or destiny in your stories, how are these reconciled along with the idea of free will? Do your characters have any beliefs on the matter?

Technically, absolutely nothing at all. The only things stopping people are time to do stuff, materials to experiment with, and energy! Not everyone can find the opportunity in the world they live in. But that's the trick of it. The world that's been formed...by people.

#Febchantment Day 11

What limitations did you put on your magic system to keep it from becoming too OP? Is power in short supply? Do spells take a physical toll on the body?

Note that this is about magic done RIGHT. Day 13 will be about when magic goes horribly wrong!

NO ONE Carloman was too busy achieving enlightenment. He's never been with anyone and never will. His first and only love is the world and its people, for whom he will do anything. Sepp from The Path of Poison will end up similar for Reasons. That boy's got a weird future ahead of him.
Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters

It's February, so let's talk about romance just a bit!

Who was your character's first love?

Was it a positive relationship for them or less so?

How did it end (if at all), and how did that affect them?

This movie fuckin rocks. The 70s and 80s were the peak age of Hong Kong martial arts cinema, but the 90s produced a number of particularly slick gems like this bad boy here. More comedy than kung fu, but it's funny as hell and when there are fights? Satisfying and stylish. Big recommend.

My brain training app doesn't recognize the word "cyclopean" as a synonym for "huge"

Very upset about this one

Kinda want to do something on here to get people talking about or starting interesting writing projects, like personal wikis, bestiaries, no matter how conceptual, but I don't know if I have the reach or clout to make people engage with it

In the meantime look! Right here! Issue 3 is here and busting with incredible writing. This was a thrill to publish, full of soft corners and sharp edges, hairpin turns and gentle landings. With some of your favourite writers (right?) and at least one debut author.

About a quarter of the way through now, predictably great. Vibes are immaculate, art is disgusting and smelly. Character selection might be my favourite bit so far, the idea, like in Vermis 1, of using a character select to subtly introduce major world concepts is really fun. Very Dark Souls.

NOPE it is a concept that only doesn't exist in the material world, but is completely antithetical to it. I'm kinda answering two days at once here and I'll try to not repeat myself, but determinism of any kind is the domain of the tyrannical will of the Godhead.
#FebruaryWorldbuilders, good morning! Are prophecies or psychic abilities real in your world? How do they affect the world? Tomorrow I will ask about free will, so if you have prophecies, think about how that influences whether free will exists or not, and have an answer tomorrow😁

I know I'm repeating myself at this point, but: literally anything, make your own magic. Think, feel, act, create meaning and symbols physical or abstract as loci or rituals, they all leave a mark, all exist. Focus on one action or many. People are actually doing this all the time.

#Febchantment Day 10

How is magic actually performed? What kinds of speech or actions are needed to execute a successful spell? An ancient incantation? A hand sign? Martial arts movements?

Or is it enough simply for the caster to THINK their spell into existence?

Watched Huesera The Bone Woman (2022)

I'm trying to be fair, but I feel like I watched a very dour drama for about 1hr 20mins with a couple spooky shots before I got a horror movie for the last maybe 12mins? This is not a bad movie, it's just...very modern horror movie.

I can write 3 flash stories a week, sometimes more, sometimes 3000+ word stories in two days, genfuckers come at me and you will die

Anything. You. Want. A tree. A cup. A room. A time of day. A memory or feeling to focus on. The world itself. That's the entire point: make the world what you want. Everything you do leaves a mark, build something in your image.

I do have another answer though:

#Febchantment Day 9

Let's talk magical tools! What does someone need to do magic in your system? An arcane focus (e.g. wand, staff, orb)? A book of spells? A musical instrument? A bunch of obscure ingredients?

If you have magical companions, they would count here 😁

Get really into magic. Seek out scrolls, manuscripts, etchings on cave walls. Begin working at night, where you can pull possibilities out of the murk. The moons hold memories you can call down. Listen to whatever will speak to you. You'll visit the outside real soon.👁️👁️

#FebruaryWorldbuilders If you have nonphysical realms in your setting, how can they be accessed? Can characters go there or somehow 'see' inside it? Does something else live there and come out when summoned?
