Frontier Shrine When men began to rise from death, they were taken and sent out into the unexplored realms of the continental interior. There they wandered and eventually settled, beyond life and humanity. But alas, their curse followed them and took root in the earth, creating sparse lands of tireless winds and ashen mountains. The Undead venerated no gods of living men, gods who had abandoned them, but were desperate to hold fast and minimize their suffering. So they held communion with whatever forces they could beckon in the cold lands, building grim shrines of cyclopean stone and carving faceless idols, wherein dwelt things with no names, who began to demand vile offerings. The Undead could not be destroyed, but for every reanimation, they retained less and less of their corporeal forms. Their zeal for sacrifice, in exchange for promised powers and reinstated life, but rarely delivered, ultimately created a land of hollow ghosts. Eventually, the Frontier was all but abandoned and only the darkly curious would venture out into the sere wastes. Those who returned whispered fearfully that whatever the Undead had called down still remained in the deserted frontier, a place now home only to a race of enslaved phantoms.

Watched Demon City Shinjuku (1988)

This is pure A N I M E. I'm trying to articulate what is it about 80s/90s OVAs that grabs me in a way much modern anime doesn't. Animation quality? The stylistic sensibilities of the times? It's hard to define. But it's SO FUCKING COOL, EVERY SINGLE TIME.

The red wizard Carloman and the vampire then engaged in a magician's battle. If the dragon was the bloody claw and gnashing fangs of the Dark, the vampire was its suffocating grip and leeching maw. Dragons commanded powers of darkness with force and cruelty, vampires compelled with malice and venom. They were the archsorcerers who whispered shadow magicks to gnostics in places of ruin and death, and for every spell and soul under its control, the lust and gluttony which had festered in their life, and bloomed in the grave, was enflamed anew, and they were granted the power to further feed it. Arcane words of light and fire and breath, fragments of Manatarian Sun mantras, Minosmirii hymns of glory, calls for the passage of the titan Macha Cannoc who is C'noch of the Earth, the setting of the Serpent's Coils--each one was met with wordless invocations of eternal darkness, of lightless caverns and their biting chill, of the sunken grave's creeping miasma, of the dark beyond the stars which flays the shackles of the material world, the slither and grasp of the demon, and the crushing weight as of a great hand not upon the flesh, but upon the soul. Carloman's eyes flared burnished gold and the vampire's grew to points of absolute black.

I'm unhappy with this sword and I almost ripped it out of the pad halfway through lmao. It's so uneven and messy and I couldn't figure out any interesting details to put into it.

But I spent so long trying to make it work that I HAVE to post it. Look upon its shame.

2. In the Demiurge world, blue is calm and serene, and is one of the colours that symbolizes, and thus can evoke, the sea or sky in their calm states. These change colours based on circumstances, too. The others are weighty/turbulent grey, lively green, and wine-dark violent.

Crystal Abyss Far to the south, there lies a range of vast mountains who peaks touch the celestial Upper Air. Far beneath the two highest summits however, leading deep into the earth, is a steep valley that suddenly opens up at its darkest reaches. This new passage is studded for leagues with singing crystals that thrum with a curious energy and soft light. At a point, the earth and rock ends, and one’s path is made entirely of crystal slopes and steps, which seem to the astute observer cunningly fashioned rather than of natural growth. Descending into the sunless, shimmering depths, one comes to a tall cavern and there is revealed to them a strange vision. An ancient race of beings lies entombed within crystal sarcophagi, serene and still, lining the walls and ground. Through the distortion of the crystal, it can be seen that they resemble us in some superficial way. It should be noted that striking these tombs elicits a shrill and immensely unpleasant tone, a tone that feels to all who hear it, like an alarm. And yet there is more, for beyond the long hall of crystal graves there is an immense set of irregular steps, now plainly shaped by hand, or grown. At the end of a three day descent, there is a change in the air, the singing dims, stops, and before them lies a vastness of dark. The steps continue until, at a point, they don’t, and the wanderer finds themselves surrounded on all sides by what seems to be nothing less than the infinite expanse of the night sky, perforated with silent stars. No further progress can be made here, and a long trek in silence must be made back out, for after glimpsing this, the crystals stop singing. Sages who have ventured deep within and studied the stars in that dark say they are like no constellations of the world above, and guess either the entombed old ones happened upon the cosmos of the underworld, or perhaps sit now as eternal guardians of the place from which they once emerged.

1. Carloman! He's literally the red wizard. He wears red robes, unadorned but made of rich, quality material, symbolizing that he is clad in heat, blood, life, passion, and anger, a great boon to his magic. Colour theory has observable, tangible effects in his world.

4. From Heaven's Shadow in Issue 54 of Shadows & Sorcery, a story I'm still very fond of (and which has a monster protag!). You have to listen to Painkiller by Judas Priest while reading it btw.
Three demons, no longer men, creep through heavy shadows spreading terror to add more to their kingdom of eternal undeath. A nest of humans with hearts beating still-warm blood shriek as their cover is torn aside. They see a taloned limb gripping a terrible blade of spires, connected to a horror with a crown of a thousand eyes and a rippling body of black mercury.

Some disjointed thoughts about this movie:
1. This schlock horror from 2002 has better lighting than most modern horror and that's sad
2. About an hour in this movie's logic just completely melts, what was it even about?
3. It's a naive early internet time capsule/Ringu clone--cute, but not good
