All my friends are doomers but they think you're pretty hot
If you think we should never make judgements, that changing our forms of life is only possible through some anthropological revolution or totalitarian control, then I'm not sure you have any business on the left.

Things I've learned on bluesky today:

1. People just like the things that they like. There is literally nothing you can do about that, except transforming human nature, or control their behaviour. Forms of life can't otherwise be changed.

2. You can never judge people for what they do.

There is no credible pathway that maintains current global North living standards while achieving emissions and resource use reductions necessary to address the climate and overshoot issues we already face.
November 16, 2025 at 11:17 AM
I think this sums up where we're at and is a near explainer of why we aren't going to adapt to overshoot or climate change. We are, in fact, going to lose.
Also I will go further: if you cant reckon with the fact that people Enjoy Consuming and think about how to accommodate that then the planet will, in fact, die, and the green project will, in fact, lose.
Accepting that people like them and seeing how we can accommodate that while still reducing emissions is not rocket science

The list of things being sacrificed for shareholder profit is endless.

It’s literally everything that makes life worth living.

And, of course, it’s life itself.

Heartbreak & rage are the only rational responses.

And yet, they live with a sense of impending doom.

Because their doom, at the hands of increasingly strenuously-denied climate collapse, is impending, in visible ways they can’t keep out of the back of their minds, however hard they try. But they can blame the wrong people for that feeling, and do.
Almost universal across the west. Voters have never had it so good. But they feel more was promised. And isn't just the cost but the difficulties of life, and the sense of a class that doesn't face these.

I’ve been saying it for ages, what we’re seeing is a repackaging of the “ain’t no Black in the Union Jack” nationalism of the 60s, 70s and 80s

A joint study by European Space Agency & NOAA concludes we have gravely underestimated ocean acidification.

We’ve already crossed the planetary boundary, shattered it for the Arctic, & eliminated 43% of coral habitat.

Stopping emissions cannot reverse this.

Notice how quickly we've moved from deporting "illegals" to the idea of deporting any migrant whose face doesn't fit, irrespective of legal status. Next stop: some form of ostracisation for any person whose face doesn't fit, whether they were born here or not?

We're deep in National Front territory

So the left just keeps oscillating between horizontalism and electoralism — trashing the last phase and repeating what failed before it? Forever? Cool.

This graph says it all: instead of starting to go down, the *annual increase* of atmospheric CO2 is setting new records. We're making climate change worse at a record rate.
Turning this around should be our top priority, and it's not.

Great piece by Andreas Reckwitz capturing the kind of politics taking shape as, for the first time, the West sees the future as loss and regression.

It’s an excellent summary of possible avenues for action:

Not a comfortable read—but sugar-coating does not help. No countryis currently on track to meet 1.5°C Paris target. To reach it, individual lifestyle emissions in high-income countries must fall by up to 94%. Transport & nutrition remain largest sources of emissions.

None of us are safe in a world where basic norms in respect of the sanctity of human life are blithely disregarded. Those norms must be enforced, and enforced visibly. There must be political and legal consequences for every politician who made the genocide possible. The alternative is unthinkable.
