This is an excerpt from Haffner's 1940 book, Defying Hitler, written in exile

Text reads: Incidentally, it is typical of the early years of the Nazi regime that the whole facade of everyday life remained virtually unchanged. The cinemas, theaters, and cafes were full. Couples danced in the open air and in the dance halls. People strolled down the streets. The Nazis used this to great effect in their propaganda. “Come and see our normal, peaceful, quiet country. Come and see how well even the Jews are doing here.” The secret vein of madness, fear, and tension of living by the day, and dancing a dance of death: those one could not see. Just as when you see the smiling face on a poster for razor blades in today’s subway stations, you do not see that it belongs to a man whose head was cut off in Plötzensee prison four years ago, for “high treason,” or what goes by that name today.

I've quoted Milton Mayer's book on the early Nazi period, but I could have quoted others. This attitude was common in the early years of Nazi Germany, especially in the period from 1933 to 1936, when the regime was consolidating power

This was a statement meant to be about what I thought Starmer thinks. I didn't realise he actually said it himself.

Yet just because the system for processing asylum claims has become overwhelmed does not mean the UK itself has too. Foreign-born UK residents are much more likely to be of working age than the UK-born — and thus less of a fiscal burden. They tend to be healthier than the UK-born, and are much more likely to have a university degree. Seventy-five per cent of them have lived in the UK for more than five years and 90 per cent speak good English. None of this suggests that immigration is likely to usher in any sort of financial, social or cultural calamity. (Tim Harford)

I'd hate to live in an era of economic decline, resentment towards immigrants, disillusionment with the Labour Party, backlash against the left and racial minorities, and precarity among workers!
