A lot (though *not all*) of Classic Who criticism is shallow and reductive as hell, tending to be very vibes-based, treating the show as less dynamic than it actually was, and oversimplifying the storytelling by hyperfocusing on tropes and formulas.
And yes I've been guilty of it too.

This fact inspired my daydream where, with Billie Piper (maybe) playing the Doctor, they just get Eccleston as the companion and redo Series 1 with the roles reversed.
It'd be dumb as hell, but kinda hilarious at the same time.

When I was seven - long before I first watched either story and only knew the names and some vague trivia about them - I assumed An Unearthly Child was a prequel to The Empty Child and just had mental images of the First Doctor twatting the gas mask kid with his walking stick.
