School librarians are freaking out. The site is used a lot, esp for middle school. And nonfiction that isn't narrative or bio - such as country fact books - has been decimated in kidlit to the point where it doesn't really exist anymore outside little kid books, so no replacement for the site.
Killing the CIA World Factbook might seem like small potatoes, but it was a touchstone of curated facts in a sea of disinformation.

I don’t want what’s happening in Minnesota to stop until ICE leaves there and every other community. But I do want people to recognize that there’s a race element here. There’s a reason people are treating the protesters of Minnesota as somehow nobler and more patriotic. More "American."

And you cannot talk about these distinctions without talking about race. With white folks, there's incredible energy being exerted to define what they're doing as good and noble.

And like it or not, that’s an insult to every single protest and movement that’s existed before. Mutual aid is not new. Legal observers are not new. Observing the police is not new. These are not groundbreaking concepts. They’re just being seen by the public in a way that might be new to them.

I don’t have enough time to get into it, but mutual aid was not created by Minneapolis in 2026. I respect what’s happening out there, but there’s a mythology being created about what’s happening in Minneapolis to contrast it with any other movement that’s ever existed before.

This is the thing. Freelancing happens to work very well for some people as individuals (me, for instance) but society needs real newsrooms and real teams. We gig writers are just part of the ecosystem.
A lot of people cannot just start a paid newsletter or become freelancers to sustain their careers. The sports, metro, and international desks did work that requires *team* resources, like legal checks, documents, access to archives, and long-term beat experience.

It’s hard to put into perspective how truly massive the warehouse is that was recently sold by the Rockefeller Group to the Department of Homeland Security for $70 million to build a concentration camp in Surprise, AZ. Across the street is a huge neighborhood and a school. It’s 400,000-square-feet.
