I am an unrepentant Superbowl Scrooge & was happily home all day after a week+ of Way Too Much Stuff, but I am still embarrassed that when I went for my little afternoon walk to drop my compost I was briefly confused about why all the undergrads were so clearly en route to a party, crockpots & all.

To clarify: this isn’t a program run by Delta. They may not even know it’s happening. You fill out the form offering to donate miles. Someone in need fills out their own form, and a volunteer contacts you. You book the ticket yourself for the person in need.
DID YOU KNOW?

If you have Delta Sky Miles, you can donate them to help a kidnapped-and-released person fly home!

They are set free on the streets of El Paso or another Texas town with no phone, no money, nothing at all. Your miles can get them back to their loved ones!

I feel like Los Angeles is a place where people expect ICE to happen because the kidnappings have been happening to my home city for decades, so there’s less media attention to it now. and I want folks to see that in LA, Latine students are organizing major protests & the police are attacking them

LAPD arrested at least two teenagers protesting ICE raids in Los Angeles yesterday. They were also seen corresponding with ICE agents on Alameda Street during the demonstrations.

As myself and others within the academic and research world have been clearly pointing out this has all been counterinsurgency, not actual on the ground changes
Elite media is helping to amplify that counter insurgency propaganda in place of the reality that nothing on the ground here has changed
NEW: The Trump admin certainly put on a show last week about changing tactics in Minnesota after ICE agents killed Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old VA nurse.

Trump even suggested it's time for "a softer touch."

Except residents say nothing has changed. At all. www.huffpost.com/entry/ice-mi...

Two weeks after Alex Pretti’s killing, federal agents have shown no signs of backing down. The resistance definitely hasn't.

my only hot take about grad school this week is that I finally made it to "congrats, here is the key to a tiny room in the library that is all yours" status, a situation I have coveted since I was 19 years old.

since people ask me about this a lot, here are my recommended starting points

(I also like The Wee Free Men for a YA-focused start and Going Postal is, while later in the series, one of the most purely fun books)
DO YOU LIKE GOTH SHIT? Start with Mort, the first of the Death books.

DO YOU LIKE DRAGONS? Start with Guards! Guards! the first of the Watch books.

DO YOU LIKE ANTITHEISM? Start with Small Gods, a standalone skewering of organized religion.

From there, follow this guide to find your next book.

I have access to affordable, ungatekept physical therapy for the first time in a long time and paying $10/appt to just have a SAFETY NET as I try to bring strength training back into my life after 5 years of unpredictable back pain relapses & fear is...simultaneously both astoundingly simple & huge.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON UPDATE

Our fundraising, combined with neighborhood orgs and other folks fundraising, pooled more than $11k to pay rent for FIVE HOUSEHOLDS and keep them housed and safer from ICE.

You all are absolutely AMAZING and I cannot express how much I love you all and this community.
Hi friends. The asks are many, but so are the needs.

I’m raising money to help keep ICE-impacted families housed. These are families that are behind on rent because primary earners were abducted or are out of work because of ICE.

The 1st family needs $1670 ASAP.

I’m on the scene at Franklin and 1st. A convoy of about a couple dozen ICE/HSI agents broke the entryway into an apartment building at 6am. No warrant presented. Less than 24 hours ago, Tom Homan announced the end of large convoys in Minnesota… Bullshit.

School librarians are freaking out. The site is used a lot, esp for middle school. And nonfiction that isn't narrative or bio - such as country fact books - has been decimated in kidlit to the point where it doesn't really exist anymore outside little kid books, so no replacement for the site.
Killing the CIA World Factbook might seem like small potatoes, but it was a touchstone of curated facts in a sea of disinformation.

I don’t want what’s happening in Minnesota to stop until ICE leaves there and every other community. But I do want people to recognize that there’s a race element here. There’s a reason people are treating the protesters of Minnesota as somehow nobler and more patriotic. More "American."

And you cannot talk about these distinctions without talking about race. With white folks, there's incredible energy being exerted to define what they're doing as good and noble.

White folks don't protest, is the subtext. We respond with nobility and planning (unlike those other people.)

And like it or not, that’s an insult to every single protest and movement that’s existed before. Mutual aid is not new. Legal observers are not new. Observing the police is not new. These are not groundbreaking concepts. They’re just being seen by the public in a way that might be new to them.
