I want everyone who follows me to be clear: the photo below encapsulates my favourite weather event on Haida Gwaii 😂
A house with a front fence and open gate, at night. There is 40 cm of fresh snow on the ground, fence, and roof, creating a perfect snow day. Haida Gwaii rarely sees snowfall, so this was an exceptional snow day, photo taken March 2021.

Canada's Quakes of 2025
The Haida Gwaii region is one of Canada's seismic hotspots. During 2025, 1248 #earthquakes (M0.7-4.8) were located here (few were felt). Note that several M7-8 earthquakes have occurred here during the past 100 years.

Serious situation on Haida Gwaii - the north end of the island is completely cut off from the south end. The hwy is washed out at jungle beach, sections of pavement gone. The Yakoun River is flooded + the back road is impassable at several points. No way to get to ferry, no freight delivery

Hwy 16 on Haida Gwaii has been closed due to a washout from extensive flooding at Jungle Beach. They are waiting until first light tomorrow to assess the damage.

Always a bad time for us when westerly winds are high #haidagwaii AC plane couldn't land due to dangerous crosswinds & Alliford ferry cancelled.

NOAA cut funding to the Alaska Earthquake Center, directed by my friend Mike West. As a result, seismic monitoring by nine stations in Alaska tracking tsunami-causing earthquakes will go offline by the end of the month. This endangers people in Alaska, Hawaiʻi, and other parts of the Pacific.
This lab is key for tracking deadly waves. Its sensors are about to go offline.

I had my doubts about the new weather warning Haida Gwaii received yesterday (coastal flooding) - but damn they were correct. Highway is currently closed
A web camera still of Highway 16 at Tlell and Wiggins road. The road surface is covered in seawater rocks and logs, due to a SE storm. The highway is currently closed until the debris can be cleaned up and the tide has gone down. Waves going over the breakwater and striking the road surface at Tlell. A new weather warning that environment Canada issued for Haida Gwaii calling for coastal flooding risk.

13 years ago today (at 8:04 pm) a M7.8 earthquake rocked #HaidaGwaii. This offshore #earthquake was felt to more than 1000 km distance, caused strong shaking, landslides, a tsunami and was followed by 1000's of aftershocks

Fish in the forest, seaweed in trees?
Yes - 13 years ago tonight, the M7.8 #HaidaGwaii earthquake generated the world's largest #tsunami of 2012. Runup to 13m in some inlets left seaweed in trees and fish in the forest. If you are near water and feel long and strong shaking, go to high ground.
