NOAA cut funding to the Alaska Earthquake Center, directed by my friend Mike West. As a result, seismic monitoring by nine stations in Alaska tracking tsunami-causing earthquakes will go offline by the end of the month. This endangers people in Alaska, Hawaiʻi, and other parts of the Pacific.
This lab is key for tracking deadly waves. Its sensors are about to go offline.

Fish in the forest, seaweed in trees?
Yes - 13 years ago tonight, the M7.8 #HaidaGwaii earthquake generated the world's largest #tsunami of 2012. Runup to 13m in some inlets left seaweed in trees and fish in the forest. If you are near water and feel long and strong shaking, go to high ground.

I'm so sad that BC has legislation that this practice is to be abolished, and yet Eby has refused to move forward on it. It's so stupid

A great thread on advances in tsunami monitoring and tsunami science.
Here is @noaa.gov's model of the tsunami propagation from the people at PMEL, initiated with the earthquake location and then calibrated by the DART buoy observations. There is a wealth of great information at their website (link in thread). (1/6) ⚒️ www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOtJ...

On X, Masaki Nobushiro posts a recurring (and useful) drawing about how people wrongly think a 1m tsunami is a cresting wave when it's actually a wall of water filled with dangerous and deadly debris that's strong enough to sweep up a car.
