The list of films for The "Dave Watches The Great Films He's Never Seen" Project has hit 120 (including those I've already watched over the last few weeks). That should keep me busy for a while.

I'm not starting an award.

But I am going on a perhaps quixotic months-long exercise in spotlighting great quality early 2020s queer SFF. The details, the thinking behind it, and a bonus cringeworthy pun are here!

I look forward to shouting at y'all about great books over the next few months.

I'm also unspeakably charmed by Isiliel, the solo project of one of the members of NECRONOMIDOL, which is just fantastic. I'm not /generally/ a metal guy, but this is extremely my shit. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGLj...

So far I've watched Bocchi the Rock, BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!!, Ave Mujica (which is a direct sequel to MyGo), and am just about done with Girls Band Cry, and I'd happily recommend all of them. Haven't seen K-On! yet, but it's on the list (along with Idolish7 and Carole & Tuesday).

STOP THE FUCKIN' PRESSES I have just come across NECRONOMIDOL, a lovecraftian metal/idol band who are extremely fuckin' good. www.youtube.com/watch?v=9j7m...

I did think that I should probably check out some REAL Japanese music, as opposed to fictional stuff, so I went on Bandcamp Dive and now I'm about to get extremely into Japanese Shoegaze -- sorry to everyone I talk to about music for somehow getting MORE insufferable

I was briefly surprised that I got so into all these different girls band anime, but then I realised it was an entire genre about sad girls with guitars and it all fell into place.

Would it be better if they put more effort into their political attacks? Probably not, but at least there'd be less shit flooding into the zone, such as it is.

One of the more depressing things about National going all-in on AI slop attack ads is that they don't HAVE to. Everyone knows they've got money, but god forbid they give any of it back to New Zealanders. Just spewing out thought-free bile at the lowest possible cost and effort. #NZPOL

$?????? millions on a liquefied natural gas terminal that cuts against the actual economics of natural gas instead of just paying for everyone to switch to fucking electricity is probably peak Luxonism. Bad economics, bad infrastructure, bad decision.

This is a significant issue for democracy and trust in news media (already dismal, as we know). I'm so glad that Meta is taking action against this automated AI slop on their platforms by doing... *checks notes* nothing. #nzpol

I feel like I say this every time I see Nick Cave but I left the gig thinking "oh yeah I get organised religion now, I understand"

In another universe Nick Cave is a tent revivalist preacher for his own cult in which I am a devoted parishioner.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, 6 Feb 2026. Probably the best Bad Seeds gig I've been to! The band was on fire, the vibes were immaculate, and all the songs sounded great, both the old and new. Plus I never thought I'd get to hear the Bad Seeds doing Shivers, so that's a new life highlight.

There were moments between lining up at 4.30 and Nick appearing on stage at 8.00 where I thought "was it worth the effort to get this spot" and then all doubts disappeared as soon as the band started playing.
