Still trying every day to learn something from the past, survive the present, and figure out how to make a better future. Also, I like trains.
I really mean it when I say that when this is over, if the good guys win, there will be a place for Klein and Yglesias on the tumbrel.

Archives matter - but not to the Carney government. Canada has only ONE federal funding program for community archives, and they just killed it. Gone.

@jamestaite.bsky.social, if you haven't read this yet, you should.
I recently wrote about how we should be building with Canadian materials, and I neglected to include stone because concrete is a local material. I have reconsidered; Ontario cement is made with US coal and petcoke, and rebuilding Canada's stone industry could create a lot of jobs.
Why we need a stone building renaissance in Canada
Canada is made of rock. If we are going to "build Canadian," we should rediscover and reinvent this very local material.

On top of this, the Liberal government is cutting 70 jobs at Library and Archives Canada and cutting its annual budget by $22.1 million permanently.

So much truthful and authentic evidence of Canada's history is endangered.

So the Documentary Heritage Community Programme is axed. A serious blow to #cdnhist from the Carney Cuts.

RIP, it did good work.

But I guess we need more American fighter jets instead.

Cool. Now do "Boom Boom Pow" by the Black Eyed Peas.
I regret to inform you that “1979” by Smashing Pumpkins was released in 1996, which is now 30 years ago. Meaning a similar song released in 2026 would be called “2009”

When my partner and I lived in a one-bedroom apartment we conceived one (1) child. Since we've been living in a single-family dwelling we've conceived zero (0) children. What do you make of that, mister professor of sociology?
Side research find: did you know that living in an apartment as opposed to a suburban single family home causes fathers to lose their virility?

So claimed a York U sociology prof in this April 22, 1968 Globe and Mail article...

This is classic scapegoating — blaming refugees for a healthcare crisis caused by decades of underfunding and privatization.

These charges are cruel and punitive. We won’t fix a broken system by putting up new barriers for people who are already struggling.

Alberta separatism is funny because as someone with an established track record of thinking about scenarios in which subnational units become independent a sparsely populated block with no defensible borders or independent access to the sea is getting gobbled up in like three turns of Civilization

Here's yet another excellent test for Carney fans who consider themselves "progressive". This is literally a toned down version of a Harper policy.

Canada will require refugees and asylum seekers to co-pay for health care starting in May
They will have to pay 30 per cent of the costs of services such as dental, optometry and physiotherapy and a $4 flat rate on each prescription.

I have a lot of sympathy for reporters and editors in mainstream news media outlets, given that there have been so many job losses and cutbacks in that world.

At the same time, so much reporting being done by people who still have media jobs today is really, really bad, and needs to be called out.

Good morning!

Last night I learned three important things:

1) My flight today from Toronto to NYC to give a talk in the Planetarium at AMNH tomorrow was cancelled due to the snow

2) The best alternative Air Canada could offer me was Wednesday morning: too late!

3) But there is a TRAIN 🚂

my Blackest opinion is that the presumption of conflict between "America has a long and deeply rooted history of violence" and "we can and should fight against today's version of that, as did those who came before us" is less a philosophical debate about how to treat the past and more a skill issue
