The Notwithstanding clause needs to be taken a great deal more seriously than conservative premiers currently do. The moment it's used, it should be customary to trigger an immediate election to give the citizens whose rights have been revoked to either condone or condemn the government.

Along with a number of other recommendations, it should be expected that immediately following any government invoking the Notwithstanding clause, the government triggers an election. This will give citizens the "immediate" ability to either condone or condemn those responsible.
