Glad to see Polygon cover the resistance of game developers to generative AI--and to be able to speak briefly to one of the greatest dangers of this entire thing.

Gen AI doubles down on making MORE SPACE for production issues that *already make games worse.*

Paid a Colombian tea grower $1,500 for a shipment. Got billed $150 by the Trump administration at the border. *I* got billed. Not the tea growers. Not the Colombian government. Me. The American business owner. I paid the Trump tax.

Video game leaders telling people they’ll get left behind if they don’t embrace AI aren’t people worth listening to or respecting. They aren’t interested in quality _and_ if they lead a successful studio, they’ve fully misunderstood why their studio was successful in the first place.

Funny how we all just “have to” accept AI as progress even if it’s janky and either has demonstrated no improvements to productivity or outright tanks it, but we never had to accept remote work despite every study showing it improves productivity AND workers lives.

Hmmmmm

I wrote more words about how it feels to be a translator watching the games press report on AI and labor, coming from a field that's fought these battles for decades. It may look like I'm beating up on one outlet, but it's not about them; I've been trying to write this for me and my peers all year.

Tim Sweeney getting this upset over a review grilling a game for using AI tools is proof that more and more reviews should be taking the same approach whenever AI pops up.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has defended AI following Eurogamer's 2/5 Arc Raiders review, which criticised the game's use use of AI voice generation. "AI dialog generation + human personality and tuning could totally transform gaming," Sweeney said.

When the safety bill came in the helpful comments “just use a VPN” well that’s why that was always a short sighted solution. This is not about child safety is bigger and will have consequences with industry’s if they do try to ban them and let alone the gov organisations that use them for security
The British government admits it is now monitoring VPNs use by UK residents. Regulator Ofcom has contracted with an AI-powered surveillance service to detect the number of citizens using VPNs to evade the Online Safety Act.

The UK tech minister has said a VPN ban is on the table.
